Osram Nightbreakers are good. I have them on mine and they are a nice bright output.

I've found the Halfrauds +100% ones to be decent in two cars I owned, and they are often on BOGOF or BOGOHP.

well as i have a unhealthy obsession with lightbulbs lol here we go:
personally Id have to side with Philips over Osram - i had Osram nightbreakers and thouroughly preffered the philips.

for me, i look for any bulb close the 4500k-600k rating as it gives you closest to 'daylight'
at the moment i have philips blue vision ultra and they're fantastic. Better than my cheap aftermarket HID kit off ebay. also steer clear of 100w bulbs, yep they're brighter par say, but in actual terms of visibility if ound they dont give a decent field of output as the beam pattern is normmaly messe up - if that makes sense

I fitted a pair of Ring Xenon Ultima H4 bulbs to the Land Rover and found them to be far superior to the original LR offerings particularly on high beam.

^^^Not this.

I put a set on my standard headlight equipped MK3 Mondeo and found the light to be marginally whiter but no brighter.

I'm after a decent throw of lights (currently have MTEC COSMOS BLUE which are crap) and a whiter/blue look.
Then in that case I wouldn't bother with the Philips X-Treme Vision. Marginally paler than the standard bulbs but wouldn't call them whiter/blue. Decent light output though.

I think Philips did a 'Blue Vision' which was supposed to offer better output but with a noticeably whiter/blue light.

I've got 100W bulbs from eBay in my MX5.. Apparently not road legal, but I've driven behind/driven towards loads of Police and never had anything said. Though my MX5 headlamps are probably a ft off of the ground so the beam isn't in anyones eyes.

When I saw the heading I am thinking your local garden centre..................

When we asked the store man in the navy for a bulb, he would always say "You put bulbs in the garden, you want a lamp"

Sory guys, back to the thread.

A big part of me wants to get a HID kit but it seems like alot of hassle :/
HID kits are very much a case of plug and play tbh. The only issues are finding somewhere to mount the ballast and drilling a hole in the headlamp back covers to pass the wires through.

Careful with 100w bulbs as the increased current can melt the wires! I wouldn't say they're a very good idea...

There is a distinction you need to make between the bulbs you're looking at, OP.

First there's the xenon-style blue-ish ones that, while they do produce a whiter light, are not really much brighter than standard. The best of these is probably Philips Blue Vision Ultra, which claim to be 4000K and 30% brighter than standard. I have a pair of H1s in place of the standard bulbs for high beam in my Focus as the lights are bi-xenon and with the standard bulbs there were two different colour temperatures of light. I think they're a very good compromise.

Secondly, there are the bulbs simply designed to be bright, which have the same colour temperature as OEM, but obviously perform better! The best is probably Philips X-treme Vision, which claim to produce 100% more light.

Yea, and MOT issues, seems alot of hassle. I guess my car would of had HID's if they were meant for them! Need to get ordering some new bulbs today, just don't want to waste my money on getting some with a crap light throw.

Did a motorway journey the other evening and it was awful not being able to see fully ahead. Will not be going on another motorway until I have new bulbs that for sure.
My daily driver is/was an E30 with non projector lenses, you want to talk about rubbish light output, I know where you're coming from.

One thing that might be worth considering (as well as fancy bulbs) is cleaning/polishing the headlamp glass.

Best bulbs I've used so far are the Philips X-Treme Vision. Less than £20 online.
