Obviously with the MX5 being the number one, what is number 2?

Small, light, nippy, known for its handling, cheap...

Integra Type R?
Clio 172/182?

Or is there an alternative RWD car?

Caterham? Although that doesn't fill the cheap point.

The second PH favourite is, oh what it is? I can't remember. Something that's 'mapped'! wink

Boxster is a great car and cheap to buy, but servicing and parts will not be cheap I guess. The Caterham isn't enough of an all rounder I don't think either.

Now is the time to try a posit an alternative as I have been scathing about others....

Maybe a Honda S2000? (Even though that is basically an MX5 but 'more so')

The import turbo MR2 comes up regularly.
I'm surprised the Mk IV MR2 doesn't come up more often - seems PHers treasure some luggage space which proves all cars must compromise.

The what now? MK IV?

THe Mk3 does have some luggage space, enough for a weekend away, depending on how many shoes your OH feels are neccessary. It's not that convenient though, being behind the seats, it's a bit annoying to get at.
Fair point, well made though I always compartmentalise the Mk II into early and revised for some reason and if Ford can call the Mk V Cortina a different Mark to the 4 then so can I....

I'm confused. There is no Mk4.

We're talking about the roadster, yes?
I was agreeing with you.

RE: The MR2 Roadster

I own one, and it's a great pedal, and it's my everyday car.

Cheap (a really nice one can be had for sub £5k now). Fun. Convertible (excellent quality hood which negates the need for a hard top for anything other than security IMHO). Reliable - in 6 months it has used NO oil, literally, not a drop. Not fast, but certainly not a slouch.

However, as an answer to everything...I would have to consider something with a bit more luggage capability if me and SWMBO did not have her Mazda2. Though granted it can cope with most everyday situations, just not absolutely all. There will inevitably be one or two times a year that you need just a little more space. Though that said, the MX5 isn't significantly better as the boot is pretty shallow.

That would have been other suggestion, they're getting pretty cheap and reasonably priced now and have cheap servicing costs. The only thing that may scupper many people is the group 20 insurance.

Personally though I'm looking to buy one around early spring time for the right price, as I'm 27 and insurance on most cars is actually sensible (still over priced in general though but thats a new topic entirely)

I vaguely remember from an old post that the Porsche 944 was up there with the PH'ness of an MX5?

A little while ago it would have been a Puma, but they seem to have fallen out of favour of late in these parts...
