If your having trouble with the drain plug, I'd seriously suggest you manage to undo the filler plug first.

Surprisingly, this is very very good advice.

Some fillers are easy to get at from the side but if you have one that faces rearwards then it can be tricky.

Filler out a piece of cake
It's a btr dif with the drain on the bottom of the back plate and the way it's chewed up it looks like aluminium

Hi Peter, I had exactly the same problem mad

In the end the only way I could get the drain plug out was to weld a wheel nut on the end of it wink

The combination of heat from the weld & better purchase on the decent 19mm heavy duty wheel nut meant I was finally able to remove the damn thing smokin

But even then it required a huge amount of effort to free it smash

I suggest you do the same as me, if you don't have a mig welder then take it to your friendly local mechanic & bung him a drink to do it yes

One thing is for sure, if you carry on like you are now you'll just keep rounding the corners off the plug & you'll never get it out nono

Good luck & dont forget to let us all know how you get on smile

Dave.

He's not getting it is he? laugh

Daz, you have the early GKN diff with the square centre drain plug.

The later BTR diff we are talking about here uses a flanged bolt as the drain plug.

PETER: When you get it out, replace with a M12 x 30 hex flange bolt (23mm Across flange)

If i'm not disorientated, this is after you've removed the tank right?

If so,I have the same arrangement, it;s a b*stard to get undone, but i did manage to get it done eventually. I cut a piece of square bar to size and spent many hours getting it undone, and surprisingly it took ages to get it back on as well. Taking the tank out, how long does that really take? It may be quicker in the end.

Yes, tank out.

It realistically takes no more then half an hour to remove, a couple of pipes, a few wire connectors and two straps.

I removed the tank so that I could finally tighten the diff bolts properly and change the diff oil at the same time!
