Not sure which is the right word to describe the activity but I am looking for some advice on this please. smile

I have a small area (approx 12' square) at the front of my house which I am looking to turf/ve. It is currently down to tarmac which I propose to excavate and lay turf.

So

- Depth of excavation. Depends on what nasties lie beneath in terms of hardcore I guess but what depth of soil should I be looking at?

- Any general advice on the purchasing (type, cost etc) and laying of turf would be gratefully received

Thanks smile

You need to remove all the hardcore underneath down to soil.Dont use screened skip waste, buy proper topsoil.Compact it thorougly ,level it flat to any surrounding paving or it will be a pain to mow.
Stick a little growmore down and Just lay the turf on top and water it until moisture reaches the soil below. When you water it for the first time it may become soft so stay off for a few days-one week or so until it has firmed up. Dont leave it for ever to cut either once it is growing, we cut after a week in the growing season and cut it just slightly higher than you would your lawn to begin with.

Thanks for that Andy thumbup

I did a little research just to check that it was a DIY job as Iv never done it before.

Im going to get some muscle in to remove the tarmac and hardcore and will get a price off them to lay screened topsoil (as well as pricing it up myself).
