DIY COLD AIR INDUCTION FEED ON MK1 FOCUS, K&N 57I INDUCTION
Discussion
Gentlemen,
i have gone to the liberty of attaching a long piece of my old air box ducting to my front grill and then snaking it up toward my induction kit with the intention of siphoning fresh cold air to said ind kit, its made a difference in terms of increased noise but was this worth it? even a tiny bit? see i think this is a good thing to increase cold air flow to an ind kit but a mate that worked for AA mocked me and said to take it of as cars are designed by well paid and well backed technicians for optimum performance and not by 'silly little boy racers'. hahahaha.
so whats everyones thoughts then?
car is a mk1 Focus 1.6, induction is K&N 57i, i am NOT boy racer. lol

An induction kit on a 1.6 Focus??
Rip it out, refit the original ducting and use an uprated panel filter if you really must. You'll be doing 9 tenths of eff' all with that induction kit.
Seroius? why do people do this? i bought the car with ind kit fitted already.Rip it out, refit the original ducting and use an uprated panel filter if you really must. You'll be doing 9 tenths of eff' all with that induction kit.
surely it does SOMETHING though no?
makes a noise, maybe thats the something...
Your mate from the AA is right. For example the Civic I own, people often 'launch' the standard air intake out and replace it with a K&N and the like air filter. I wonder how many of them realise that the standard ones are a cold air feed anyway...
MCM Busted this wide open, they even stopped using them on their own cars for full effect.
Yeah they can sound nicer, but that is all they do on modern cars.
It's a different story if you're replacing an old pan filter on a pair of SU's but that's it...

I bought a car with one fitted, all the ducting tie wrapped all over the place to draw in the cold air because of course the manufacturers make it so the car is effectively being suffocated and fed hot air, straight from the drivers fart infested seat cushion, basically smothered....
So, the "Taipan" carbon airbox and miles of trunking was a godsend, er no, the trunking wasnt long enough so matey boy had bought two lengths and to join them thought that squashing one so it fit inside the other was a marvellous solution, he effecitively spent £200 to create a massive air restriction, car worked ok and pulled well but was no quicker than a standard one (we tried, back to back, Rover BRM it was) which was strange as it had a full Janspeed system, a remap, head work, the air filter, bigger throttle body, fuel pressure doofer and some other bolt ons.
Anyway, I removed said air induction/Amateur HVAC system and guess what, the car felt much better, despite just drawing in air from under the bonnet.
As has been said, panel filter, if you must, I would remedy the lack of CC's first though

The problem I've seen with the MCM videos is they haven't tested a decent N/A car. It won't make a difference with the turbo engines because the turbo's sucking so much in already. It would be interesting if they did a test on a N/A straight six/v6/v8 and see the difference it makes. Probably not a lot anyway mind you.
Ah, some "good answers" already
In a nutshell, cool dense air is better, or will allow you to produce more power that warm less dense air.
However, your engine may not be able to either take advantage of that cool air or depending on your factory set up, that may already be very efficient so what you have done makes no difference.
OE manufacturers are more interested in NVH and emissions so that's why you don't get a rorty induction or exhaust from the factory.
There are legit upgrades available if you can manage to find your way though the advertising bull.

Recently ran back to back dyno runs with a 1.9 E36 Compact with and without induction kit.. Below figures are all from the same dyno and each configuration was run three times.
IIRC we ran 148BHP with Induction Kit and cold air feed. Then returned the standard airbox with an uprated panel filter with a 4" (2" above standard) air feed straight into airbox from the front bumper and bingo 154BHP.
Above figures were with a full klarius exhaust system and superchips remap..
This may not be the case for all cars but whenever adding "tuning" parts Dyno runs are a must!

They've done it on 3 cars. Two Turbo, one N/A

maybe i should just keep it for the noise factor, i do kinda like it!

Each to their own I guess, Induction roar is one of those things like compressor stall or atmospheric dump valves that have annoyed me when driving rather than intensified the experience. maybe i should just keep it for the noise factor, i do kinda like it!

eta: this too 2. Not well paid.
Although our "technicians" (them wat do the spannering and run the dynos) are bloody magicians and deserving of a more illustrious or less diluted title.
