Doesn't it just have a regular 722.6? That's a pretty strong box if the fluid is changed. The V6 is good too.

There will be rust and don't expect it to drive particularly well. There are better cars about for the money IMO.

Thanks disco. Other option is save up some more wonga and have a look at a circa 03 e class with 3 L TD any knowledge much appreciated. I have all ways been weary of buying cars right on the model change. Seems to me they haven't had time to iron out the glitches.

I and other W208 owners could get low 30's on a motorway run - that's quite respectable for a 1990s generation V6 engine

Engine and gearbox are both known for their reliability.

Rust is a significant issue on these cars though, but for less than £2k it's a nice car.

They rust pretty bad too but Mercedes knew that so some of them had their body panels replaced with a bit of persuasion from their owners

There is no diesel CLK of that generation.

I wouldn't dismiss a V6 petrol engine outright - it will surely depended on your annual mileage for any potential savings.

ps. the 3.2 V6 diesel engine in other Mercedes of that generation is a good engine, however it is not especially fuel efficient - 40mpg on motorway runs.

Interior does let it down from a resale point of view but I don't mind a bit of velour strange but true

Early W209 CLK diesels aren't too much more than comparable W211s:

Yeah, but an extra 40k on the clock....

So many people on PH claim they can get early/mid 30s mpg 'on a run'. I've had a quite a few largish engine petrol cars, I would love to know how they do it. If I were buying the car in the OP's original post then I would be thinking 25 on a run and probably 14 - 17 mpg around town.

That interior really is a thing of beauty!

If it's one owner from new, why are they selling now? Just ticked over the 100k mark, or something more sinister?

Good luck!

Not highlighting any particular car - just price low: high. A W211 diesel (E-class) would be about £300 cheaper than the W209 CLKs at the same mileage.

We have the 209 3.2 v6.

You can just about squeeze 32/33 mpg on a long motorway run but its like pulling teeth.

On average expect mid to late twenties, around town its very poor, 23 if you're lucky.

I love the engine and box, smooth and refined with a bit of go about it. Personally I would need to have a better interior, but as has been said, its less than 2k.

From what I've seen some cars have rust. What X-reg cars don't?

surprising that no one has recommended a W124 coupe instead.... I'd always rather have one of these (or the saloon/estate) than the next model that you're looking at. Didn't Mercedes build standards take a nose dive around when this model was made?
