Porsche reveals LMP1 car

As excitement builds over Le Mans 2013 Porsche is already looking to 2014 and its new LMP1 car

To be honest Porsche, we're pretty full of Le Mans 2013 at the moment. So to try and skip that and go straight to the big news of the 2014 return to LMP1 seems a little mean spirited, especially given the return of the 911 RSR to La Sarthe.

Anyway, we'll let that slip. And allow ourselves a little glimpse of the future and the reason Audi should probably focus on enjoying this year's Le Mans too. Because next year it's going to have a proper challenge on its hands.

Porsche isn't officially saying much about the new car, save to say it's a clean sheet design and entire admin and workshop buildings were freshly built to accommodate the 200 people working on the project. What, you thought they'd go into this at anything other than full throttle?

"We are well on schedule," says Fritz Enzinger, head of LMP1. "Our newly formed team has worked with utmost concentration on getting this highly complex vehicle on the track as soon as possible. This allows us a few additional weeks for more testing and further development. From 2014, the regulations are primarily based on efficiency. This makes the competition amongst engineers more interesting and presents us with completely new challenges."

With attention focused on the RSR and celebrating the 911's 50th in the GT category Le Mans 2013 has plenty to keep Porsche fans happy. But Le Mans 2014 is going to be a whole different league... And poses the most significant dilemma for the team.

What livery?

Still think LMP1 could stand another top drawer entry.

Anyone else looking likely; BMW? Jaguar?

I wonder if Porsche could snatch Tom Kristensen from Audi that would be epic! And he has got a history with them.

Be really interesting to see how this goes against the Audis, what the powertrain will be etc. Always good when a big player comes back.

PS - Surely it should be "let that slide" at the start of the 2nd paragraph?

About bloomin time, there's only so long you can live off your racing 'heritage' before you're on shakey ground.

Porsche need to get out there and winning in LMP1 as well as running 911 RSR's & LMP2's.

AWESOME!

This is enough to bring me back to Le Mans. I sincerely hope that they modify the rules to make petrol cars competitive with diesels. I am getting a bit fed up of the Audi domination. Perhaps they can only be beaten by their own family?

That's not as daft as it sounds, Mr Edgar did assist in getting Aston Martin back to GT Racing in 2002...

However, they did have some road cars to start off with!!

Webber, S.Edwards and Heildfeld (Quick Nick).

Mega driver line up if it happens, and very probable.

- Though the new LMP1 regulations will demand complicated hybrid systems?

I think a GTE entry would be more sensible and likely.
