AMG or Ford Engines?
Discussion
I think this is probably good news.
They're not really ford engines, just made in a ford plant. At least they'll be proper bespoke engines, not just yet another "manufacturer" stuffing AMG bits in a pretty body.
I guess they'll have to refine them somewhat, but they've done that already with the V12 in the V12VS, with better ECU and so on.
AMG would probably have meant forced induction, lower capacity V6 and V8s, as Merc seem to be moving that way.
For small manufacturers the emissions regulations just mean you have to reduce by some proportion, not to a certain level. Lets face it, that's not too hard compared to current engines.

I think you will find that most manufacturers are heading towards the smaller engine in order to meet future planned emissions. Euro 6 applies from 2014 and Euro 7 will be yet more restrictive.
Ford are already producing their Ecoboost engines which are smaller capacity but higher turbo'd to meet standards.
The other alternative, of course, is hybrid technology or continued development of the hydrogen cell. Which ever route is chosen, it will be expensive to produce, thats for sure.

I was convinced that AM would be getting AMG power. This was not the news that I was hoping for. Surely our current engines will not meet the planned restricted emissions that the EU are planning
Thank God no MB power plants. So very happy AM will continue to use their own bespoke motors. Buh-by MB, dont let the door hit you in the butt on the way out...robgt said:

What made you convinced? I thought the exact opposite:-links to both AMG (and Toyota) engine supply had been denied in the not so distant past.
-the engineering effort to slot AMG powerplants in would have meant starting well before the new investor came in to be finished before the Ford deal ran out.
- the investor's links to AMG weren't noted as "technical".
This is another example of poor direction on the technical aspects from Aston. And probably an indication of lack of funds too. It's the easier route in many respects, but they are painting themselves further into a corner with this. There will only be so much they can do with the current power plant line up both in terms of power and emissions, and extracting more will become increasingly time consuming and expensive.
I don't see this doing the value of the company any favours at all either, so attracting new money will be tough.
They desperately need a better powertrain line up and if I were them I'd be looking at somewhere with a decent track record but without a multitude of "exotic" tie ups already.
Smaller, forcefed power plants are what our leaders are pushing us towards so we simply need to such that up. Think of the trees after all!
