Successful record set up on the North Circuit
The Carrera GT is the fastest car to lap the Nürburgring North Circuit. With the clock showing 7'32.44 minutes, Horst von Saurma, Chief Editor of the German specialist magazine "sport auto," achieved a new record for road-approved vehicles, at the wheel of the 612 HP strong Porsche. He completed the 22.6 km long round in the Eifel at an average speed of 164 km/h.

"It was really touch and go. The circuit was dirty in some sectors, which didn't make it any easier," beamed Horst von Saurma with glee, after his record round.

For ten years the magazine has been awarding an (unofficial) challenge cup to the driver who drives the fastest round on the Nürburgring using a road-approved car. Thus the race for the best time round the circuit has become a prestigious affair, as Nürburgring is still the best and most honest test of the quality of a vehicle chassis, motor performance, aerodynamics and naturally of tires. Since 1995, times have gradually improved from 7'52 minutes to the current 7'32.44 minutes. Wolfgang Dürheimer, Member of Porsche's Management Board responsible for Research and Development: "The time achieved by Horst von Saurma is excellent and demonstrates the potential of our car. Until recently such times could exclusively be clocked up with pure racing prototypes."

The journalist von Saurma clocked up the fastest round in the context of a so-called "super test," which the magazine executes regularly. Top times on the Nürburgring, always driven by the same tester, are among the criteria. Wolfgang Dürheimer: "It is precisely for this reason that the 7'32.44 minutes are so easy for us to put in to context and are thus valuable."

Same time... but I guess the Radical is not a "Street car" according the guys at Sport Auto

www.radicalmotorsport.com/news_folder/nordchliefe/index.php

Date: 15th July 2003.

Radical's new SR3 Turbo, driven by touring car ace, Phil Bennett, shattered the Nordschleife lap record of 7:32, by a massive 13 seconds. The new record was made all the more impressive by the fact that the all-new 1500 turbo-engined car had only covered a small number of development miles at Lotus' Hethel test circuit, and the record was achieved during it's first and only flying lap of the awesome 14-mile German circuit. more on the link above...

Isn't the CGT a limited run car? Do these count?

Either way, very very quick.

But you can make a 962 road legal...

This has been debated many times.

Whilst the Radical is faster, it is not recognised as a production car in Germany as it cannot be purchased for road-use in Germany. It is only available in the UK under certain specific SVA/small manufacturer rules we have and it is not European Type Approved, whereas the CGT is........

err no, Radical has done 7.19 if you read that article again its 13 sec UNDER 7.32.

"Radical's new SR3 Turbo, driven by touring car ace, Phil Bennett, shattered the Nordschleife lap record of 7:32, by a massive 13 seconds"

It was a 1st flying lap & Bennet is not the most acomplished ring man like Walter Rohl, Dirk Shousman (sp?) etc so prob a healthy amount could be shaved off it.

Indeed we've discussed this before-

Hmmm...so the production-car record holder at the 'ring is British...except it's not legal in Germany...so, of course, the German car holds the record as far as the Germans are concerned!!!

Convenient for Porsche!

Quite honestly, I can imagine the Radical Turbo being an absolute PIG on the roads, so there is a small point. Having said that, the GT's clutch isn't exactly user-friendly!!!

The good professor is alleged to have lapped Goodwood in a CGT in 1 minute. That's f***ing quick. I think a McLaren Can Am car did it in 1:01 or thereabouts in 1971.

I mentioned this to Phil Bennett, here is his reply!

Hi Piers,

Ha - no they haven't beaten my time I did a 7m 19sec lap and so this is still a long way away from the Porsche - which did 7m 32s. However the magazine Sport Auto were actually attendant at my lap record attempt - its just they got the hump that a small £40K British car can destroy the German £300K versions!

The basis of the record attempt is that any car needs to be capable for road registration, run E marked road tyres and pump fuel.

Anyway hope you are well - I guess the move must be in full swing?

Regards, Phil.

I would have thought that the record holding car should be able to be registered in any country within reason. And I would include Germany as a country within reason.
