I don't book holidays per se but have previously seen low prices on www.lowcostholidays.co.uk though never used them.

I tend to scour around for the cheapest flights (as I have 5 to take) which is often Thomson or Vueling and work from that. So last summer, though I wanted Mallorca, malaga was half the cost. I then book a villa separately.

A good example is a flight I just booked to Tenerife at the end of January 2014 which was £138 return - you can barely get to the Isle of Wight for that.

I live in Italy so I don't use UK based sites but most of them are global.
I travel for pleasure as much as I can and I usually use this approach: I look for the flight first using sites that can serach for flexible dates like Skyscanner. They can also offer wide destination ranges like the whole Spain for instance and seeing which is the cheapest flight destination. Once found teh flight I start looking for the accomodation, but not looking for the best price but for the best rating in reviews sites like Tripadvisor. Once I find some places I like I start to look at a deal for it, going directly to hotel site first or writing them mails than looking for sites can do comparisons like Trivago. Most of the times booking.com seems to offer the better deals but I sometimes managed to get better rates just mailing directly to the hotel.

Don't forget to use Google Street View to have a good look round the area you're going. It can often totally alter your view of a destination you haven't been before.
