I'm knackered today. A lot of walking yesterday with pooch, with some big climbs and 12km in the lakes. I needed a good nights sleep tonight and I had to get up at 5:30am for work. Bed at 10:30pm last night. Mable our pooch sleeps in her bed, on the floor in our bedroom. At least once an hour, usually more, she was either sick or defecating gravy all night until I got up this morning. As much as I'm worried about Mable I'm also pretty unhappy about my lack of sleep, and I thought if she was just a good dog who slept in the lounge... But, which is worse...

  • Being woken up regularly through the night to clean sick/bum gravy from the laminate (important point I think) floor and barely sleeping all night long, or...
  • Waking up at 5:30 feeling groggy but okay, heading downstairs looking forward to scrambled eggs, toast, and fresh orange juice to find ~10 piles/puddles of sick and a scattering of st puddles on your carpet.
TBH, despite my exhaustion today I think I 'd rather the bedroom option! Imagine the smell of option 2!

Seriously OP - you have a sick dog and all you care about is your own sleep?

Oh gosh, people jumping to the wrong conclusions on PH, nothing new there then!

Yes I'm pretty unhappy that I'm tired, but at no point did I say that my priority wasn't my dog. She got a lot of attention and a lot of cuddles all of last night and she wasn't told off or made to feel like she was being bad, on the contary in fact. Had my proirity been my getting a good night sleep, I'm fairly certain I wouldn't have spent the entire night making sure she was comfy and clean.

In terms of the vets, my OH is vetenary nurse so Mable is in good hands. If the reason you both think I don't care about my dog is because I haven't asked for advice, this is the reason why, I'm covered on that front. She's taking her to work today so a vet can have a look too, and also to save our carpets!

I think the cause may be some very mucky water she submerged herself in when trying to cool off on the walk yesterday. Pretty sure she drank some too.

Apparently she's been sick again, and diorreahed again this morning, but the freqency has gone down as it's only one of each since I left at 5:30am, rather than the every hour last night. All came out of nowhere as at the end of the walk she was legging it around as if we hadn't even started yet, she slept in the car the whole way home as usual, had some food and water before bed then zonked out. Hour or so later it all began. Although, her final poo of the night before bed was sloppy, but outside at toilet time.

To me the OP reads as a tounge in cheek question over the pitfuls of having a sickly dog in the bedroom, or waking up to a destroyed living room, which is how it was meant to sound.

It's not at all that I think you're out of order for giving advice, that's what people do - all I'm saying is I didn't ask for it because it's covered, not because I don't care about pooch.

Yours and the poster belows posts read as if I was neglecting Mable, hence my point about how much care and attention I had given her last night.

You seem about as cranky as me this morning!

It's just typical 'animal lovers' mentality I'm afraid OP. Any opportunity to jump to the defense of poor wikkle animals is too good to miss! Sanctimony rules I'm afraid. It's one of the reasons I regard anyone with more than a healthy interest in four legged creatures with suspicion, they tend to be a bit mental you see...

Like the earlier poster who mentioned 'staying up with sick pets/babies'.

I think that the order in which she listed her priorities speaks volumes.

I like to think you read the OP again, realised it was a lighthearted whinge about being knackered due to having a sick pet, and then deleted your post as it was sanctimonious twaddle.

I don't think we should give bex stick; yes she did jump to the wrong conclusion but her heart was in the right place. I've also seen her give lots of people tons of good advice on here so no need to personally attack her.

Adding smilies might have helped for people to realise it was light hearted. That's not how I read it.

No not all, I still read it the same. I did actually make some lighthearted remarks re the lack of sleep as well but hey!

And Issi- it's a pet forum, so pet was mentioned first, nothing more.

It's not how I read it either, and I held my tongue earlier & didn't post as I don't have babies but what Bex was saying pretty much beat me to what I'd have said.

Issi, I think you need to spend a little more time in this particular forum before you start saying ANYTHING against 'our' Bex.

FYI, Bex is our resident Vet Nurse. The amount of time & quality of advice she gives to PH is worthy of a medal! Her priorities are correct. We love her, please do not piss her off or you will be hunted down and 'disposed of' biggrin

TBP - I hope your dog is much better today!

For the record, I wasn't having a dig at Bex, as much as the slightly bonkers animal loving community in general. I'm sure she's lovely lass etc etc

BUT, it's not uncommon for said animal lovers to get a bit erm... rabid at the meerest thought of an animal not being treated as a member of House of Windsor. And that is always worth a lampoon/piss take or two... I think the responses illustrate that nicely as we tend to read what we want to see into these things.

As for smilies... come on, the written word has been around for a good number of centuries and hasn't required a liberal smattering of little faces to convey a message. If you need smilies to understand a post like the OP you might as well read Private Eye and treat as a broadsheet!

wink

p.s. Winking smilie included to ensure light hearted and slightly cheeky tone is conveyed to all.

Yes, but since the dawn of writing, the written word has been misinterpreted - especially when you do not actually know the person that is writing.

As a prolific user of the forums, I know some people's styles (eg BlindSwelledRat & Mobsta) that other peopl get offended by because they don't know how to read it.

Sure, so in the event of any doubt one could assume the writer to be of sound mind and probably not abusing his animals OR one can immediatly engage hand wringing mode.

Animal lovers tend to be of the temperament to do the latter ime.

It wasn't that long ago that dogs were kept outside, you know when dogs had a specific useful purpose and weren't around to satisfy the the desire of people to have a cute and cuddly thing for purely selfish reasons... Would have prevented the OP's problem, you can't hose your living room down after all...

Should this have a winkey face?

Thank you Ali!! Quite embarrassed by that but appreciated.

I read it as I read it I make no apologies, I never accused the OP of being cruel to his dog, I didn't think he'd not looked after her!

My life revolves around animals but I am also a people person, I am a realist, I am just as likely to defend an owner if I feel the error over their pets care was genuine as I am to get upset at those that should've known better.

So OP I am sorry I misinterpreted what you'd written, a couple of smilies really would've helped but mostly I really hope that Mable will be ok again in a couple days smile

To get back to the original question...

Neither. It's far worse to get up to the loo in the middle of the night, not switch the lights on and halfway down the hall... feel the offending matter squeeze up between your toes.

Maybe it's my sense of humour but I thought my op was fairly clear in it's tounge in cheekness.

In terms of Mable, she was still being sick this afternoon and I don't want to lose another nights sleep so we dropped her off at dogs Trust for re homing.
