Hyundai Genesis Legato SEMA concept

SEMA is all about excess and silliness, right? Hyundai begs to differ

Given its rather prosaic title, the Speciality Equipment Market Association Show always throws up some wild, wonderful and wacky cars. SEMA, err, highlights from previous years include the Mercedes GLK concepts, the Fiat 500 funny car and Toyota's attempt at adding some yoof appeal to a Prius.

400hp, rear-wheel drive, decent looks...
400hp, rear-wheel drive, decent looks...
But Hyundai's latest SEMA concept actually looks right up our street. It's based on the Genesis for a start, which gets a thumbs-up in our book. It's a good-looking and (apparently) quite decent coupe that we would really like to try in Britain.

Collaborating with ARK Performance, Hyundai has created the Genesis Legato concept. From spec and appearance, it appears a harder, faster Genesis with a hit of visual attitude. It's promising.

The standard 3.8-litre V6 has been fitted with a Stroker Kit (it's for the engine, honest) that takes swept capacity to 4.0-litres. The kit comprises new pistons, con-rods and an upgraded crank. Further tweaks to the induction have pushed the Genesis Legato to 400hp and 425lb ft, up from the standard 348hp and 295lb ft.

Mean, moody and ... a Hyundai?
Mean, moody and ... a Hyundai?
But a few tweaks under the hood wouldn't get the SEMA crowds swooning. So there's the obligatory bodykit to bring some show drama, with more aggressive bumpers and side skirts. The spoiler actually looks rather apologetic given the rest of the body addenda. ARK have also fitted its DT-P coilover suspension; who cares about ride quality with show cars?

So SEMA 2013 is actually off to a encouraging start. Further attention-grabbing cars, for reasons laudable or otherwise, will surely follow soon!

Looks decent - an evolution and better looking version of the Genesis.

Reminds me a little of the GT86 but better looking. Hyundai should bring this out as the only 'sporty' model in loose terms in the UK is the Veloster.

Is it just me, or is the final sketch on the left in grey inks very reminiscent of the Ford Puma, albeit in slightly stretched format?

Not a bad thing I hasten to add...

Agreed, I can see elements of the GT86 and also bits of the Scirocco (although the latter observation could be due to failing eyesight)

I think that looks immense, a bit AMG C-class coupé to it. 400hp from a V6 is pretty damn impressive too! Build it please Hyundai. biggrin

The front grill area looks like that of the new Jag, not a bad thing either.

Proportionally it looks very nice and one of the best concept cars I've seen in a while. If it can be developed and launched in the UK with that kind of power, I'd consider it.

looks fantastic but that's not really enough these days is it? I am all in favour of performance cars but does anyone need or want a 400bhp hyundai? They would be better off putting their resources into emerging technologies and powertrains rather than developing cars which have a very limited market and shelf life

Good to see there using good old engine power and none of this eco Crap!
All pointless if they never sell it over here though.

You are aware that they have been making the Genesis for a number of years now? I think it is perfectly acceptable for them to branch out into this market, there is room for a cheaper alternatives to the German brands.

Agree with this. They would be better off pitching this similar to a BRZ or GT86. Keep the weight down, make it more economical.

I don't get this all people want is a good looking rwd sports coupe with a manual box, Hyundai have delivered it for a few years... GT86 arrives ZOMFG! Amazing, what we have always wanted.....but Hyundai have been making it for years

Look at them, a $20k (which is like three quid) you get a manual, 300bhp rwd coupe, with a decent interior and looks pretty damn good

More appealing than a GT86 to me, I'd certainly consider one and Hyundai need to release it over here.

When the car was first released in the US I went into a Hyundai dealer to ask when we were getting it, at the time it was still unconfirmed but the dealer had had a few people coming in and asking the same question. If they'd had people asking when it was a US only car that the majority of the public were completely unaware of at the time, it could only every gain popularity if they did release it here surely?

Sad to see so much negativity. Were any of the major Japanese manufacturers taken seriously when they first wanted to build a performance/sports car? Just look at their back catalogue and see how far they have come. Hyundai should be applauded for wanting to build such a vehicle; seems a good basis to start. There is no reference to hybrid technology so it could just be a proper old school rear wheel drive performance car. If they build it and it's no good, that would be the time to criticise.
