With the Child benefit for higher earners thing I need to fill in a tax return, I missed the date of the 5th of October to register as I thought I already was having been self employed a few years ago.

Anyway, I filled in the application and it said six to eight weeks for my UTR to arrive and the online filing deadline is 31st Jan 2014.

So if they sort out my UTR and its back in six weeks can I then fill in my Tax return with no penalty ? I have all the figures worked out for my income via my P60 and payslips.

They are only interested int he first three months of 2013, so three CB payments for three kids and then for my income between 50k and 60k, once pensions and cycle to work is taken off I am only just over by £600, plus £600 private medacal BIK, so 12 percent of £565 or £70 or so I will have to pay back.

So, if I am late what do they do, £100 plus the tax, no idea ?

If you've ever filed a tax return then you should have a UTR already. If you don't know it HMRC will post it out to you and it should only be 4 or 5 days.

I'm not sure how long the government gateway codes take to come through, but if you are running out of time you could use a 3rd party tax filer such as www.ftax.com or www.taxfiler.co.uk to avoid the penalty. You can file with these with just the UTR number.

The penalty will stand if the return isn't in by 31/01/13 even if you haven't got the codes through in time. HMRC will not accept that as an excuse.

Yes - if you have ever been issued with a UTR you should be able to reinstate it for any new Self Assessment you need to complete. AVOID at all costs ending up with two or more UTRs. It can cause a world of pain and grief.

Can you contact the accountant?

He/she should still have the tax reference details he used when making the previous submission?

It is still possible to submit a paper Self Assessment tax return without the UTR (NI numbers and PAYE references still work).

However, if you are filing electronically (which you must now do for a 2012/13 tax return as the paper filing deadline date was 31 October 2013), then you MUST have a UTR. If you don't, the HMRC computer will not allow the return to be submitted.

If you are filing the return from your own computer, as well as the UTR you will also need Government Gateway and authentication codes.
As has been mentioned, using a third party tax agent, such as an accountant or tax adviser, gets around the need for Gateway and authentication codes.

But you still need that UTR.
