I'll try to be brief.

My mother-in-law sent two cheques to Santander to pay into her account. Both were made out to her and her sort code / account number was (correctly) written on to the back of each. The funds have been taken from the originating accounts, but have not appeared in her account. This happened a number of weeks ago so it isn't a case of waiting a bit longer.

She has scans of the cheques, provided by Santander, to prove that the details of her account were completed properly. No amount of talking to or pleading with the abysmal Santander has produced any kind of solution, explanation or apology. A recent email from them shows that they neither understand the problem or care about putting things right.

As things stand she's £150 out of pocket, and dealing with Santander has been a nightmare for her. (She's fairly old and recently widowed).

I'd appreciate the forum's advice on the next step to take, who to complain to and how to complain. I hate banks at the best of times but I'm damned sure that if she'd been dealing with Barclays or Lloyds this would have been resolved by now.

Many thanks.

I am sorry to hear of you mothers problems. Written recorded formal letters of complaint will bring the complaints procedure at Santander into effect. Your mother will receive the monies owed to her. It may help if an accompanied visit is made with your mother. Talking to the branch staff may be ineffective as you have found out but the complaints procedure will out this right. I hope it is resolved speedily.

I'm sorry but laugh

Seriously but what did she expect by having Santander as her main bank?

Solution is.

Move to First Direct and get £125 for doing so.

Make a formal complaint to Santander, she can do so by email.

They will investigate, return the money, and pay her £25 compensation.

She didn't know any better, and it was her late (Spanish) husband who dealt with the finances.

Thanks to both for your help.

Who's account and which bank did the funds come from?
That's the end that needs to put a trace on to find out where the money has been paid to
