The work starts.

Ok so today my bible arrived.
The cars now on Ramps, front wheels removed and a good inspection ensued.
Replaced 100A fuse, alternator works again(few)
First off the L/H manifold is sitting on the top chassis rail! Engine mounting?
Chassis and wishbone pickup points look bad, outriggers look shot or near as damn it!
Looks like a body off, I won't be happy until I've done the chassis so this looks like the moment I've been
thinking of for months.
Wish me luck.

I'm pondering whether to get my engine out at this moment. Just doing manifold gaskets and realising how little effort refitting them would be and how much polishing I could do if the engine's out!
Is there anything about engine removal in the bible Alun? I've really got to get it out to replace my virtually non existent heat shielding.

Which body lift threads would you experienced guys advise reading.
Seems there's loads!
This is going to be a long time span project so plenty of time to read up but would like to read a good one straight off to get me informed.
What special tools or equipment will I need to source,
I'm thinking of buying out riggers and using a good welder mate to do the job.
Main chassis is good overall but its gonna get stripped to the bone!
Ok I have a few mates with trailers, garage facilities, shot blasting, painting etc,
What do you reckon?
I really want to do this as my education!
Is it just going to hurt!

Page 56 onwards covers engine removal. Bible.
Yeah do it Alex, me two just do it all and be done with it! The way I see it is if I drive it about less than perfect,,,,,, I feel that and know the car should be in surgery, that bugs me lots so my enjoyment level drops.
Its a dream I've had.
Years ago I wanted a kit car E type, Challenger, build it myself, for you young uns out there, I was 21years old and more than capable, young family made me think twice?
Big regret so this is just finishing off that dream really, I like motorbikes you build and ride yourself, why not a car!
I need new brakes and this and that, just better to do it all now and 18 months down the line the cars like new.

you can replace the outriggers by doing a 2'' body lift. I did it last year.
Its not that painful. cut all the captive nuts off with a grinder, the seatbelt bolts can be a bugger and the 2 chassis under the dash are difficult to find. Plenty of good guides to be found.
Time consuming but not difficult.
this was the thread I started last year. couple of good tips provided

I'm not sure if I'm keen but can't see another answer.
This is the question really partial lift or full body off?
Partial is more realistic and much quicker
Full body off allows total restoration and piece of mind, a few extra mods etc but much bigger task, or is it.
Obviously takes longer but the rewards seem worth it.
I think the cost could escalates with a full body off as I'd want to replace every bloody thing so I'm starting reading the threads above, thanks Sapper.
Will read about a full lift off and see how I feel.
My cars so close to being top draw I don't want to cut corners.
Lots of hard thinking to do.
Its not about the value of the car I'd need 25 k to cover that,,,,,
Its about having it as best it can be for as long as can be.

My 5.5 had that on the nearside bank.Loosen engine mounts, jack up engine and retighten.
If yours is like mine, the bolts wern't tight anyhow!
Also check that you have the spacer plate on the offside mount.

Just wondering, why is there no spacer under N/S since this is the one that seems to be touching on most chims?
Mine had literally a shims width between chassis and manifold. Since the body off, it has been raised so l can get my finger tips between now
. As you say most cars out there will suffer from this problem !!!I haven't attempted to raise and re tighten as Phazed suggests and looking at my mounting on the left it looks to be in good order! I've never felt vibration so I'm assuming its only just touching or its properly sitting on rail!
Bit of an update on chassis
I had a really good scratch about in the bright sunlight yesterday and I'm starting to think its not so bad, I'll change my mind again by tomorrow!
Still needs a lift to assess it correctly but its more solid than it first looks, if I scrape off the wax oil and powder coating it seems most of the rust is superficial.
All the corners seem solid but its what you can't see that's bound to be rotton.
I'll update as I find things.
I think I'm going to replenish wishbones etc first. I identified all bolts and earth straps to be removed last night, I've read half the bible to remind me of what I once seemed to know, I'm going to write my own check list out,
A few people offer good advice on labelling things,
Here's another trick if you remove bolts or mainly washers/ shims/ etc, use string to tie them in order of how they go back on is very useful. Half the issues I had as a lad building motorbikes was remembering which washer or shim or spacer went in what order.
All the bad weather has had me thinking I have to protect the car at any cost.!
Sounds good but,,,,,,,,, so sunny today I just want to drive the bugger.
Enjoy your cars today boys and girls.

Too late Rich I've already started. The sun on my face today and someone with a V8 driving past earlier had me gutted, but 5 mins later and a seat in my hand I was happy, sort of!
Your to blame for all of this,,,,,,,, after seeing a proper clean chassis on yours I've been feeling inadequate ever since, lol lol lol.
I was a tap away from buying a tent before Christmas but the big one just doesn't quiet fit so thought I'd wait and knock up a lean too!
Thing is Rich ill just get everything preped at home then Trailer it straight to the garage to use the lift.
I'll have the body and Chassis in the same place.
The big issue will be me!!!!
My skills/ patience? Finance.
Finance,,,,looks like I'll get back to contact work,,,,
Not going to leave me much time to actually do the work.
