Birkin's Bentley on Brooklands banking: POTW

A temptingly alliterative Pic Of The Week with a timely element as Matt heads to Brooklands

There's nothing subtle when Bentley goes racing. The polar opposite to Lotus's minimalist approach to building racing cars - as celebrated in last week's POTW - a racing Bentley has to be big, brutish and full of pomp and circumstance. The modern equivalent to the 'racing lorries' of the 20s and 30s, there's little truck-like about the Continental GT3 but it certainly maintains the tradition of towering over the competition and looking twice the size of anything else on track.

The track in question this weekend is Monza and our Matt is going to be driving a Bentley out to Italy to see the GT3s in action. Sounds like a rubbish way to spend a couple of days doesn't it. He'll be sharing his anguish with us with some blog updates as he goes but at the time of writing he's being chauffeured to Brooklands to pick up his car. Inspiring a suitable Pic Of The Week, again from our friends at LAT, of Henry Ralph Stanley 'Tim' Birkin in a Bentley Blower at the 1932 British Empire Trophy Race. Bravo old chap, and all that.

That is one evocative picture. Makes me wonder what the life expectancy of a Bentley racing driver was in the 1930s?

Wonderfully atmospheric shot. I love the fact that a rear wheel is off the ground whilst doing some speed on the banking!
