I'm thinking of buying a 60's classic in Italy to register in the UK.

I looked at the DVLC site, I can see that VAT will not apply however there is a VCA process that asks for a declaration on headlight dipping, speedo in MPH and rear fog light.

Is this VCA process actually insisted on for a classic and are there any other pitfalls I should be aware of?

I assume proof of original date of Italian registration, via the log book, will be adequate to get a date related registration here?

My fulvia was an italian registered car and apart from changing the headlights nothing else was required-no rear fog light and speedo in kph O.K.

If it's more than 10yo, it only needs an MOT.

For that, headlamps have to dip flat or left - but tape on the lens is perfectly acceptable. KPH speedo? No problem at all. Fog light? 1980-on only - BUT if it has one, it has to be central or right.

Yes, the old Italian papers are just fine for date proof - but you won't get 'em back from DVLA. If you want them for the car's history, then get a club dating letter instead...

Brought a '66 Fiat 500 over a couple of years ago. Just need to get an MOT on the chassis number. Headlights will pass with dip adjuster stickers on, and you can leave the kp/h speedo alone.

What are you thinking of getting?

Oh, and just to add we got all our Italian papers back from the DVLA, including the historical vehicle doc that confirmed the original date of sale.

you will still need to register and declare the car on the HMRC VAT website within 2 weeks of physical import which will generate a reference number which the DVLA will need to prove VAT paid or not applicable. Failure to comply with the 2 week deadline leads to £10 per day fine thereafter.

DVLA are inconsistent in terms of the advice they give and the decisions they make in general.

re date of manufacturer and date of first registration; they will not accept an email from the manufacturer themselves but am happy to accept a letter from the owners club/UK manufacturer who take the information from the email and put it in a nice letter format!
