Hi Guys

I have my CLS 500 for sale on the PH classifieds and just received the below email from an "interested party" it set the scammer alarm bells ringing, has anyone else had the same?

The link that "Barbara" sends indicates to copy and paste in to a web browser, but looks dodgy so I haven't done so.

Any ideas?

PistonHeads: Mercedes CLS CLS500 2005

Is this your car?

(if the link does not work copy and paste it into a new tab window)

Can you please let me know what is the real price for it? I saw your add on Piston-heads but another seller has the same car up for sale at half your asking price.
Regards "

Scam.

Why would somebody go to the trouble of registering an email address in the Pitcairn Islands if they weren't up to something odd?

the good part is that I discovered there is a domain for Pitcairn Island, or should I say that I have discovered that there's an island called Pitcairn?

For the rest, I would simply tell them that if they found the same car for half the price, then I wouldn't bother dealing with you.

I have ignored it as it struck me as a bit off.

Surely anyone called Barbara must be at least 60 and not interested in a 300+ BHP Mercedes CLS :-) but a Honda Jazz or something similar instead:-)

Thanks for the responses, you confirmed my suspicions.

As Soad says, it's a redirect to a hacked page on a server with a copy of the pistonheads login page, although I'm sure it will send your username and password to some dodgy person first!

I've also got a car for sale but fallen for the scam. I opened the message on an iPhone so it looked okay, then entered my email and password. I realised as soon as I'd done it - doh! Any advice????? Obviously changed my password!

If you use the password anywhere else you should change it. Otherwise you're fine.

I got one of these each of the 3 times that I've tried to sell my car through PH Classifieds.

They were hoping for a Bounty.

I put a car up for sale on Saturday night.

On sunday morning I had a message, and to cut it short the conversation over the next two days went something like;

'Buyer' - Hi. I'm interested in buying your car.

Me - Ok, would you like to arrange a viewing?...

'Buyer' - I've just had surgery and am housebound so can't view it. Can you describe it's present condition?

Me - (Already suspicious) As stated in the advert... blah blah.

'Buyer' - Ok, great what's your best price.

Me - I didn't reply to this one.

Next day;

'Buyer' - Hi. I'm interested in buying your car.

I had exactly the same as this... and replied. Have I just committed digital suicide?! laugh

What car are you selling, if it's along the same lines as a 540i Touring then it may be genuine... if it's a Lupo 1.0s then I'd say it's a scam. smile

Cheers,
Grant
