Heard a former (US) Plod speaking about in which lanes of the highway most wrong way crashes happen, in speaking about drunk driving, impaired drivers and the holiday season.

Any guesses????

The overtaking lane, by far, in his informal polling of fellow officers and accident investigators.

His take on the subject is that, statistically, wrong-way drivers are also impaired (drugs, booze or combos) and are having a difficult time just staying on the road, so they merge over to what seems to them to be the safety of the slower speed lane for traffic, which tragically places them in the overtaking lane of the oncoming, correctly moving traffic.

As an aside, he also mentioned the very high number of impaired drivers who survived head-on crashes and the very high number of deaths in the other vehicles involved.

Still another good reason to " SLOW TRAFFIC KEEP______" fill in the blank as needed.

On a personal note, the Police on SP&L have entertained and informed me this past year, what with some of the wind up artists and deliberate police baiters, along side those who post legitimate concerns mixing it up quite well
on a wide selection of topics.

How you (plod) don't get fed up, go to Ted and just say "Right, the lot of you on SP&L, your NICKED!!!" is beyond me!

Be safe, be careful, be here next year!

All the best,

Dave

Not quite sure I understand what you're saying ?

Are you suggesting that just because an impaired driver may some how come to be driving on the wrong side of the road, we should limit the speed on these roads ?

Hope you're not as that's about the lamest reason for speed reduction I've ever heard, beats even the rubbish we get from the Brake nutters. My appologies if you're not

From the thread title, I'd say most wrong way crashes occur on the wrong side of the motorway - the wrong side for the subject vehicle, that is.

A colleague was injured recently as a result of this kind of thing.

Thanks for your kind comments.

We don't have to agree with every other poster, nor they with us. That's life. It would get very boring very quickly if we all thought the same.

For clarity,

Which lane of the motorway do most wrong way crashes occur?

To address several points at once:

No, speed does not cause wrong way crashes, drunks (usually) do. Hanging around in the overtaking lane *might* make you a target, so staying over is a good thing. No offense taken.

Being extra aware of what is in front of you these next few days was my point.

Dibble,
1. Hope your co-worker is doing well.

2. You're welcome. The comment was a light hearted attempt at making a humorous post of a serious topic. To take some of the abuse for things that you patrol officers don't control -Scameras- while on duty and them come here and take the same abuse on your OWN TIME, sounds like a reverse bonus, if you get my meaning.

Happy New Year,

Dave

I'd be surprised if there was a "most likely" lane for wrong way collisions, because, as you rightly point out, anyone going the wrong way is usually impaired. Because of that, they're unlikley to be choosing a particular lane to be in I'd have thought - my gut feeling is that they'd be a pretty random event.

Have a beer for me while I'm scrapping in town tomorrow - working nights on NYE...

Really off topic, Dibs, many many years ago I worked NYE as a taxi driver, with all the associated crap that went with it.
I hope you get something that puts a smile on your face, as happened to me when I did it(can't post it here, it's too rude).

Happy new year all
