Hi

I need to store some stuff - I have space in my garden.

I was looking at renting a room at a self storage or removals place but when I look at the costs for storage and van hire I am easily looking at 200-300 for 2 months - plus additional weekly costs if I overrun.

I am thinking of maybe buying one of those metal sheds you can put in the garden. Does anyone have one they can recommend?

I suppose it would need to be at least 8ft by 8ft (not too tall as dont wnat neighbours complaining).

Somewhere like Argos the best place?

Have a look at these...

Plastic well thought out as far as waterproofing and don't come with the condensation problems you might get with metal.

I have a metal 8x6 and as far as condensation goes, they are quite bad. I only use mine for storing gardening tools and the mower and other odds and sods so it's ok for that really. I would recommend a wooden ship lap shed over a metal one though but this is what was left by the previous owner...

However they are very strong (well mine is) and they are pretty much maintenance free other than cleaning it once in a while with a pressure washer.

I will be storing household goods like mattresses, suitcases of clothing and similar stuff so condensation is no good!

A decent wooden shed, properly constructed will be watertight. I've not stuck mattresses in mine but cardboard boxes etc aren't damp.

Rodents might be more of a worry.

Without some effort and expense,I think you're going to struggle with storing those sorts of items in a garden shed. Unless you go the whole hog, any shed is going to be either cold and draughty, or a real condensation trap.

I would stick to the idea of getting a small self storage unit, they can be had quite cheaply and once you don't need it any more, you can just hand the keys back.

this

I know 2 friends who tried storing household items in a garage. In each case mice caused huge damage.
