Hi folks

Moving into a new property soon and when we viewed it, there was barely a smattering of a grass seed out the back, let alone actual grass.

Fast forward 6 weeks and there is a mass of grass in addition to dandelions absolutely all over the lawn. And a random scattering of flowers growing there too.

I know precisely bugger all about gardening. What do I do to rid the lawn of the buggers?

In the first instance should I just be mowing it right down as soon as i get in there?

There is a lawn thread running but might be a bit much to wade through to start with. As a starting point I would use Verdone Extra a few days after the first mow. It can take some time to work but it does clear weeds out of the lawn.

I've been trying Verdone for the first time (on my front lawn) and it's been working fine.

Plus Iron Sulphate to kill the moss/feed the grass (same lawn)

For those I bought a spray bar attachment for a watering can.

I've also been manually pulling out the larger ones (on my back lawn) with a Fiskar weed puller. Although a lot of people on here are not keen on them it seems to work fine for me. A million times easier than crawling around on your hands and knees.

But not as easy as nuking them with chemicals.

They will just grow back as this will not remove all the roots.

Selective lawn weedkiller is what you want.

Thanks folks. Will mow it when I get in then try the Verdone for starters! You can get it at garden centres/b&q etc I presume?

+1. On my back lawn I used a Fiskar three weeks ago and nothing has grown back. Wonder if people have been using them properly?

Could you let us know in three months if they are still gone.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Verdone-Extra-Liquid-Concentrate-Killer/dp/B005A5OBP0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431712884&sr=8-1&keywords=verdone

I tend to order from Amazon. Seeing as you need to leave it at least 3 days between mow and use of Verdone, if you order now it should be with you just in time.

laugh Exactly, dandelions will not re-grow from the tip of the root in 3 weeks but I assure you if you've left the tiniest bit of root behind they will grow back!

I guess if you keep pulling them up you'll weaken them.

They get smaller and shorter - but there is still a stonking great tap root underneath and new flowering heads seem to pop up and seed overnight.

What baffles me is where all these sausage trees have sprung from... spin
