I've got three computers and wanted to link them all up to t'internet.

Only one was linked up via a Speedtouch USB modem connected to BTInternet. After following various threads, I came up with the perfect solution - netgear DG834G.

Three days ago, I went for the big change over.

All three pc's connected up, so switched on the first pc - the modem set up reasonable easily for an idiot. Went to go online with the second and third pc's - nothing. Played around for a bit but it got late and had to leave it.

The next day, I couldn't get any of the pc's online. In desperation, I even tried doing a new windows XP install on all three, but to no avail.

After spending two days of stripping down pc's and moving them around, I've finally got a PC to connect again.

In doing so, I've completely wrecked my setup, I can't get hold of any of my data from a hard drive that was removed so I could put a new copy of windows on.

I've just lost my number 2 light on the router, I hope this gets posted - I need help.

Anyone in the North East area that can help me, I'll make it worth your while.

My god - I've got two pc's connected now.

I dunno how I've did it, or how long it'll last but I'm quitting now while I'm ahead.

I'll go for pc #3 tomorrow.

Can't help you with your problem I am afraid, I am a complete computer numpty,(I don't know the difference between an upload and a download....) however I am sure someone will be along in a short while with advice..

However, I changed over from an Actacel BT modem to a DG834G last week, (We have four 'puters linked up in our house) and the setup is working fine......

I am sure it will be something and nothing...

Ok, after two days of no internet activity, I'm back on-line.

The two pc's were working fine, if a litle slow on Thursday night, so I packed in for the night and switched everything bar the router off.

Next morning, switched on pc#1, dns error, couldn't connect to the internet.

Switched on pc#2, dns error, couldn't connect to the internet.

Both PC's could see each other in my network places, but both wouldn't connect to the internet.

I've been faffing about again and I don't know how, but I got pc#1 to connect, then pc#2 connected without me doing anything.

Unfortunately, pc#3 is having a dicky fit and won't load up at all so I can't try that yet.

I think I've messed around with the LAN settings in explorer and have currently got it set to automatically detect settings and nothing else ticked. The connection settings is set to never dial a conection.

Hopefully, It'll still work tomorrow but could anyone confirm what my LAN settings should be?

Can you ping each PC from one and another??

Do you have a firewall running like ZoneAlarm? They could block the signal out?

Have you made the network secure and not given the router the MAC address of each PC/Laptop?

Can be lots of little things! (unfortunatly). It may even be a dodgy router.

Can each PC to talk to each other first though.

Ping??? Don't know how to. I have two pc's with literally no other software on than windows xp. I don't know if the network is secure, I just let it go off and determin the settings itself.

The router has "firewall" written all over it, so wasn't too concerned about zonealarm, but will probably d/l it aswell unless anyone thinks it's overkill?

The pc's do talk to each other - I can see each others shared documents.

Go to a command prompt.

Type IPCONFIG on all three computers.

What are the IP addresses?

(I'm thinking that somewhere along the line, NAT is FUBAR)

The Netgear router is remarkably crap at purging its memory (or whatever the tecnical term is) so it easily gets clogged with cyber crap. I have regularly found that this 'constipation' impedes connection and the Netgear techies recommended unplugging the router for a few seconds and then reconecting it. Seems to clear the system and I find whenever I lose connection to my ISP that I can get it back again by this procedure.

You may have other problems too, but keep this in mind.

Dunno if this helps, but if you are connecting through cable the cable suppier might have registered the MAC address of the computer you first connected with, and unless the router is spoofing this MAC address and provinding NAT for the other PCs (so that the cable ISP only sees one IP address/computer with the right MAC address) then they will not accept a connection.

This is certainly the case with NTL.

I agree with VictorMeldrew...

...or: NAT (Network Address Translation) is not configured AT ALL and the ISP is only passing through 1 IP address and it is being assigned to each computer in a kind of first come, first served sort of way...

Ok, on pc#1 I've got:

Ethernet adaptor Network Bridge:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix
IP Address 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1

and on pc#2 I've got more or less the same but the ip address is 192.168.0.3

I'm connected through a normal telephone type ADSL line.

It also fired up no problem this morning - worked straight away, so I'm hoping that my problems are sorted.

Looks like NAT is sorted as those are private IP addresses. Are all computers working properly?

The Netgear DG834G is renowned for locking up, if you have a problem connecting, first off always reboot your Router by unplugging for 30 seconds and plugging in again.

If this still doesn't sort it, log into the router web config page by typing http://192.168.0.1 into Internet Explorer.
Username and password are: 'admin' and 'password'

Check the router status page, you should have:
1. Modem Status: Connected
2. WAN IP Address: anything other than -

If this all looks ok, try going into Diagnostics, then into DNS lookup and type google.co.uk and see if it resolves an IP address, then try the ping test with this IP.

Should give you some stuff to play with

Once again, thanks for all your help, I'm pleased to say everything in the garden is rosy.

All 3 pc's are now working ok.

However, my house might go up in smoke in the next few hours. I drilled a hole through a plaster board wall to pass a cable through into the next bedroom and I discovered the wall is stuffed with newspaper.

Slight smell of burning paper, squirted water in with a squeezy bottle just incase. Erm....999 anyone?

Glad you're ok. That wireless router that you decided not to get is all of a sudden starting to look good, eh?

No flames yet

Wireless router will be fully utilised when the new laptop arrives. (Assuming I have any money left when the Cerb is repaired )

Resurrected this thread for one more piece of advice. When installing a new router, please change the password (same with Wireless AP's, etc). On routers (unless you change it), logon can be accomplished from either side. Just a word to the wise (unless of course you would like unsolicited help from the internet)...
