A friend of mine has a 2001 1.2 corsa, totally standard with 30k on the clock. In his 13 years of ownership he has had 5 crank sensor failures, it has come to the point where he keeps a spare with him ! He had to call the AA out last week because it wouldn't start and it was another sensor, AA man was baffled why this keeps happening, any ideas anyone?? Is this a common fault ? Was there any campaigns that this car has missed ?

Big problem with parts like this is the influx of shoddy replacements available very cheaply on fleabay etc. which are notorious for their short lives!

Worth checking with your friend where his replacement sensors have been sourced from? I think a genuine Bosch one for example is around £35, a 'cheap' one probably £10 (or less!)

Hope this helps smile

What voltage is the car running at, when it occasionally runs!
30k in 15 years is impressive!

I think you could be right by buying the cheapest parts, he said he gets them from a local motor factors, I did say to him get a price from Vauxhall

Not sure Vauxhall would be any better.

A colleague had a Vectra that regularly ate crankshaft sensors. The car kept going back to Vauxhall who fitted a new sensor every time. It seemed to be an accepted quirk of the Vectra and he was told they all do it Sir.

The 1.2s used to east cam sensors for fun not ever really had an issue with crank sensors TBH ? when my ex was delivering for a local chemist the new corsa van broke down daily followed by the replacement loan corsa, in the end i went out to the dealers (so called) mechanic who'd come out to look at the car and told him about the recall on the cam sensors, he didn't even know there was a recall, some had miss cast crank sensor brackets but that was mainly on the larger engined cars ?

I have however had lots and lots of issues with new parts being total ste ! recently tried to fit a new crank cam and map sensor to a 1.4 astra, the Crank PS was unusable from the box as the pins were so corroded, as i tried to clean them they fell appart (remember this was a NEW lucas part, not the cheaper end of the available replacements), the cam sensor was shaped differently to the loom plug and so were the 5 (yes FIVE) replcements (also lucas), the MAP just plain nver worked till i got the 3rd replacment, i ended up using OE cam and crank sensors, Lucas and intermotor use cheap chinese labour to produce parts nowdays and it shows !

Intermotor temp sensor on a 1.8 TD mondeo, 7 yes SEVEN before i got one that worked, well actually thats a lie, number 3 and 4 worked for ten mins in the car and number 6 packed up when tested with a 9V test meter (resistance test) when it comes to vauxhall i only advise to fit OE or i try and get NOS from when they had the parts made properly, in fact i started dealing in NOS ign moduals for 90's cars becuase of this experiance and dont get me started on glowplugs !!!!
