Hi everyone. I've bought a 1997 A4 quattrof with the 2.8 30v V6. Engine code ACK.

I sent a friend to test and buy the car for me while I was at college and had every faith in him, however it turns out he's a total bell piece and has stitched me up.

The car will start but immediately cuts out. However if you keep the accelerator pressed the car will run but as soon as you let go of the pedal it cuts out again. My friend drove the car to me so when it arrived it was warm. The coolant temp was in the middle but the oil temperature was towards the bottom. When driving, gear changes are possible at high speeds but as soon as you depress the clutch the engine cuts out.
On inspection of the engine there seems to have been a large oil leak on the left bank. I'm hoping it's an old leak that hadn't been cleaned. I have removed the MAF to see if it idles without it but no luck. I have tried to remove the coolant temp sensor but it is jammed on and won't come unplugged. However the coolant temp on the dash works fine so I am thinking it's not that.
I have an OBD2 scanner coming on Tuesday which will hopefully shed some light on it but until then I am stuck without a car.
I have no experience with VAG or V6 engines and any help or advice would be appreciated.
Maybe someone else has had this problem with theirs?

Thanks

Check the obvious while you are waiting.

Plugs/air filter/induction leaks/fuel filter etc.

The air filter seems clear and I can't find any induction leaks. I'll check the plugs now and then the fuel filter if I can actually get it off. Thanks for the advice.

I left him at the side of the road in the rain and refused to take him home as punishment. It would have been about an hours walk for him and as the hail stones began I felt pleased that he didn't have more than a t shirt on.

So your mate went in his own time as a favour to you to look and buy this car for u, and because it's not in a state where u would have bought it, it's his fault?!

You should have gone yourself.

You shouldn't have left him in the rain.

Great mate u are!

I'm sure you'd be very forgiving if you asked a mate to do you a favour and gave him the last of your money and he brings you back a car that doesn't start and doesn't have an MOT.
Also I've travelled over 100 miles in my own time while he was at work to pick up an RX8 for him and came back without it because it was having apex seal symptoms.

But you're right, I'm a bad mate.

That's a good shout. I'll look into it.

Would that throw up a fault code?

Very unlikely, never seen a car with an idle valve related fault. Could also be a wiring fault to the idle valve, or maybe even a throttle position sensor or wiring related fault since the TPS is used by the ECU to know when it should be in an idle state.

Hopefully I don't have to replace the throttle body

Thanks for the advice everyone. Managed to get it running at last.

My OBD2 scanner arrived on Tuesday but just kept saying "linking error" so it promptly went in the bin.

I removed the throttle body which was absolutley filthy. Id say it's never been cleaned until now which isn't surprising considering everything else I've seen of the last owner. Gave it a good clean and gave all the sensors in the engine bay a squirt with electrical contact cleaner.

Charged the battery which had gone flat and did the tba where you leave the ignition on for 3 minutes.

Started it up and it idled perfectly, literally jumped up and down with joy haha.
