any pointers for the cheapest place to get a USB drive of 1Gb or larger?
My 256Mb has been a god send, but now I have seen even more possibilities for it with more space..

Bring on the day when you can carry your entire computer in your pocket.

Turn up anywhere, plug in your memory stick and all your applications, desktop, and data are there for you.

Agreed - but where exactly do you plug your memory stick into?

I think I know where this question is headed

Ebuyer are fairly cheap, mmc or compact flash, others, cards are about £50-55 with a card reader, bout a £5-6 must be cheaper than a usb pen, but obviously not integrated.

You can put the Mac os onto an ipod and boot from firewire on another machine and it does exactly this!

Novatech - 2Gb USB2 memory stick is £85.09 + VAT

I have one. Very small. No problems with it. Would recommend.

this is so small! I have a 256Mb Version of it (bought by parents for Christmas) and it's the one I've seen that's this small. So unobtrusive, it really can be used as a normal keyring, unlike some of the juggernaughts out there.

edit --> £92 ish.

Don't forget to check out the read/write speed - this would not make much difference on a smaller stick, but if you're going to be putting 8-16 times the data over it will become an issue.

Some are 4MB/sec, some are 12MB/sec.

I'm actually after a 40Gb external USB HD. 2 Gig just won't cut it.

Western Digitial do a 40gb portable drive (called 'Passport') for about £120 and 80gb for £200.

Or there is the choice of an Iomega Rev drive which holds 35gb per cartridge, but is expensive.

Smartdisk do a 20gb 'Firefly' (tiny) drive for £130-ish, or a 40gb 'Firelite' (larger) for £90.

Freecom have a 40gb one for £90.

Even PC World sell these!! About the 100 mark for a 40Gig.. I bought a 20Gig Archos drive about a year ago now, excellent, couldn't be without it, cost 100 then... Whilst it's now a little on the small size (!) physically it's about the size of 4 coasters sandwiched together Fits inside a shirt pocket - or lives inside my suit jacket inside pocket no probs, to the point I almost forget it's there!!

aria usually are good, scan, dabs, ebuyer and novatech are also usually near the mark.

The only slight downside of the larger USB drives is that they need the (supplied) cable to connect to a PC whereas the Pen Key derivatives plug straight in...

Just had a quick check, 80 gig Maxtor drive, web only price on PC World (I know!) 71.74!!
