Is there anything more satisfying the growing grass?
Discussion
We've been in our house for about 18 months now, in the time I've knocked 3 rooms into 1 kitchen, built a downstairs WC from a cupboard, installed a door and window (new lintels etc) painted the front of the house, built a long fence, built a reasonably big deck, and had a baby amongst their things.
Last week however has been awesome. Father in law started digging over an awful patch of planting about 6 weeks ago, I got bored of waiting for him to finish so took over last week, finished the digging and mixed a load of topsoil with sharp sand and leveled the area off (heavy clay base) and on Monday I seeded it.
Monday-Thursday the green seed went brown, I got depressed, decided we should have turfed it.
Friday I forgot about it and didn't even water it.
Saturday I couldn't believe it, the seed was sprouting with10-15mm shoots, after a good watering it grew about 20mm by the morning and now looks awesome.
I don't think I've done anything her as satisfying as growing this grass, it's amazing. Be a few weeks til it looks like a bowling green but I'm so proud!
Anyone else got any small jobs that have made them happier than anything else that took them 10 times longer and was 10 times harder?

Weve been in for 12 months now, the garden was a mess as the cat lady that owned the house also kept chickens. bds strip the ground bare but we decided to seed it once we had some trees removed. We cheated a little on half of it as I bought turf due to the poor condition but the chicken st must have been good for the seed as its now fairly decent and green - apart form where the dogs insist on peeing!
However - what I find most satisfying is sitting in the conservatory with a cuppa in the morning watching the many birds on the feeders bringing their babies to feed. There were none when we moved in and now Im getting through about £10 worth of seed a month! Worth it though.

OP,
No, a good lawn is very rewarding (if effort to keep). Those heathens with plastic grass are missing out. Especially when they let weeds grow in their sheep rocks.

. Those aren't weeds but they aren't doing very well... That whole bit is going to be rethought. No, a good lawn is very rewarding (if effort to keep). Those heathens with plastic grass are missing out. Especially when they let weeds grow in their sheep rocks.

I've just done my garden out, sleepers, custom built plant boxes, treehousey slide thing for the kids but I admire the new turf more than anything. It's really healthy and lush at the moment, like a long pile carpet, walking it in leaves footprints and I've just spent an hour mowing it with stripes and everything.

Isn't it just. A high quality lawn is one of life's great pleasures imho. Plastic grass doesn't even come close. No, a good lawn is very rewarding (if effort to keep). Those heathens with plastic grass are missing out. Especially when they let weeds grow in their sheep rocks.

Similar to the OP, we moved in last August and have been tackling some chores in the garden the last few weeks.
I de-shrubbed a border, moved some roses and in an effort to re-claim it as lawn I dug it over, mixed in some new top soil and seeded it last weekend.
Looked out on Friday morning and we've got a green haze of 1" grass shoots!

Isn't it amazing how it's dead dead dead and suddenly you've got green shoots. That sneaky seed germinating all of a sudden!I de-shrubbed a border, moved some roses and in an effort to re-claim it as lawn I dug it over, mixed in some new top soil and seeded it last weekend.
