I currently have a second hand Toshiba Tectra 8200 which has been fine for web browsing but I'm doing web design now and need something that can cope with the applications.

I know there are some cheap laptops out there now but I don't know which are the best!

I'm looking for a laptop under £600 and also need a wireless card to go with it that is compatible with a Netgear DG834G.

I haven't heard good things about Acer laptops, but on Ebuyer I noticed this:

www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=79588

The reviews say it needs some extra memory and a network card, but it looks not bad value for my untrained eye.

Help me spend my money please.

They arent bad value - I know a couple of councils that use them. Make sure the warranty is long enough to last until you can afford a shiny new Tosh...

Get the additional memory from Crucial, and any old 802.11G wireless card

enjoy

The warrenty is 1 year with toshiba. I may win the lottery during that time, though I'd have to actually start playing it first.

I bought an Tosh A60 in January, its okay for a bog standard laptop, although I also bought a USB hub, microsoft optical mouse and a Keyboard for my own comfort.

I'm not sure its up to heavy duty design work, but MS Office applications aren't a problem. More memory and a wireless card would be a good idea.

Make sure you set up a restore point now and again, before and after installing your applications, it might just save you a lot of time. I'd also advise removing the built-in copy of Norton as well, especially if you are installing a copy of Norton Systemworks, as it doesn't take kindly and a reinstallation job will have to performed. (I learnt the hard way)

I have to admit my 8200 is very good, and quite robust, it doesn't seem to mind the odd knock.

Sniney shiney new gadget needed! I'll give the 8200 to Mum so it stays int he family.

For those on an even tighter budget, with a discount code, Dell are doing the Inspiron 1000 (2.2GHz, 256MB 30GB, XGA Screen) for £382. Thats less than a refurbished 1GHz machine!

(Note, not a commercial link, just a site that collects current bargains and the like.)

Saw that. It was available with free delivery for £399 last week. However IMHO 512mb instead of 256mb ram and a 15" instead of 14" made it worth the extra 80 credits
