putting a paving area down for a bench is it mandatory to have hardcore and whacker on it? The ground is vert stoney already. Area will be approx 10sqm.

I think it is advisable for heavy traffic areas.

You don't have to do anything - I have a bench placed directly on the earth.

However the more you do, the less likely it is to move.

I would if you're laying paving slabs with a mortar/cement between them.

I'd just put a 5-6cm layer of chippings to dust or grit sand down. That'll be more than adequate for a few slabs and a garden bench.
