PH has always refused to run a decent forum software platform.
When I ran one and used vBulletin, you could blanket ban I.P. addresses from certain countries where a lot of spam originates from like India & Krygistan.
You're honestly not going to get many genuine users from there so it works quite well.
Totally self inflicted problem so very little sympathy from me.

Of course it isnt self inflicted - it's inflicted by someone elseIf this trying to bust the internet carries on, there wont be an internet

Haymarket could run a decent forum software.
They could use Captcha or similar to avoid bot sign ups.
They could block ban IP addrsses where these attacks originate from.
They could require the first x number of posts to have mod approval.
If you don't do this, you are inflicting this on yourself.
We don't even have https: ffs.
PH & now Haymarket have, for whatever top secret, James Bond, need to know reason decided to keep running this antiquated platform.
Yes, it's free for us users, blah blah. So what?

The problem is the PH platform is custom written, so that maintenance is costly because they have to solve all the issues and problems that standard packages (like vBulletin) have already resolved.vBulletin is dirt cheap really, a quick look suggests under £500. Budget in an upgrade every couple of years which appear to be slightly cheaper than an outright licence.
They can even host it for £600 year (200GB month bandwidth).
I would suggest that the biggest issue will be transferring existing posts to vBulletin. I'd suggest its possible but will take some effort.

I'd be very surprised if it didn't handle PH. I just took a quick look at VWVortex, they have several forums, but looking at the VW one that has over 26 million posts, PH seems to have about half that and I am pretty sure there are bigger forums than vwvortex.
IGN boards have 118 million posts, although that runs XenForo, which (IIRC) was made by people involved with vBulletin at some point.

Yeah, I doubt volumes are an issue. Migration of data, user accounts with PH login on compatibility, UI consistency, etc would be. And you end up hoping someone else will fix the bugs in software you run which you then still have to upgrade.
I'm not sure it's easier than fixing the relatively short list of issues yet have now, but it is higher risk.
