Morning all,

Our house has a thick white paint covering the side and rear of the house, it's a large Edwardian semi in South Manchester. It's in a state of disrepair with patches missing and water getting trapped between it and the brick, causing damp issues as well as looking a mess. Had a quote from a company called Cleanpoint restoration for paint removal and repointing - quoted £7000! The guy did a demo on an area and the result was good, but I'm just wondering if I can do it myself.

His procedure was to paint some kind of gloopy liquid on to the paint, left it for a few minutes to allow the paint to bubble then jet washed with hot water. He was rather coy when I asked him what the liquid was, just said it was an eco friendly solution similar to Nitromors.

If anyone can point me in the right direction as to what to use/procedure to follow, it would be mich appreciated

The ThermaTech Doff system is what you really want for the job. Think jet wash but with super heated water so that it doesn't damage the soft bricks.

Had a quick look at this system, doesn't appear to be something I can do myself..? Anyone know which acid or solvent could be used?

You could try a product such as Peelaway 1 or 7- get a small twin sample pot for £8 ish quid and try it out. May stain the brick and not be suitable if not intending to repaint with a lime based/breathable paint.
