Ok guys, whats the best way to set up a home network between our laptop & my PC?

The laptop has XP home edition and my PC is running XP Pro. I can currently view the shared stuff & printers on my PC from the Laptop but not the other way round.

I have been through all the bits that I can think of to try and get around this, to no avail.

Any good basic tips for me to start with and to check?

We are currently using a Workgroup with no DNS.

TIA

Checklists:

1. Make sure that both are allowing NetBIOS over TCP/IP
2. Make sure that your PC has an account on the laptop that will recognise your network login from the PC
3. Use the share my stuff wizard on the laptop and when you assign rights be sure to add that aforementioned account.
4. Doubel check the laptop because IIRC file and printer sharing are not installed standard
5. Make sure the Windows firewall (if you have SP2 installed) is not blocking the file sharing ports

If I think of any more, I will post back...

Is the XP Pro firewall on?
Is the XP Pro machine actually sharing anything out?
Can the laptop see //XP_pro_machine, but not //XP_pro_machine/share?

1. No Using Norton Internet Security
2. Yes XP Pro machine is sharing folders & printers
3. Yes Laptop sees //XP-Pro m/c & shares etc
4. XP-Pro m/c cannot see //Laptop/shares etc

Message is \Laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Access is denied.

as said earlier..

Do you have an account and passowrd on the machine sharing the files (server), that is the same as the one being used on the client? Also make sure this account has the required share permissions and File rights on machine shareing the files.

type NET VIEW from the command prompt at the PC. If you can see the laptop on the net, then it is access related. Make sure you set up the shares correctly on the laptop and that the PC user has a user account on the laptop...

I've driven myself silly in the past by forgetting that I had Norton IS on a system.

Go into the NIS Firewall Configuration menu and look for the networking wizard (under the Home Networking tab). I'm betting on one machine, that the NIS firewall hasn't been told of the existance of the LAN.
