Modded Impreza STi
Discussion
Thinking of buying a modded blobeye Impreza WRX STi, around 320bhp or so. Are they easy to live with, day to day, when pottering about? I heard the WRX has woeful performance above 60mph, would a modded STi overcome this or is it more to do with gearing?
I understand it's best to buy on condition, and check for regular oil changes. Are there any big jobs which need doing once the car reaches 100k miles?

I wouldn't characterise a WRX's performance as "woeful" but it's certainly less impressive than an STi, and less impressive than most of today's hot hatches.
What version are you considering? What are the mods on it? What sort of driving will you be doing? What's your budget?
Assuming you are talking about a pre 2008 car not the hatch or later, although many people use the cars as dailies they are IMO borderline as a daily...noisy, rattly things with not a shred of the refinement you'll get from a German car, and the fuel consumption truly is woeful. (Later cars are more comfy at the expense of some excitement/raw thrills.)
However, in terms of ground-covering ability in all weathers, performance/£, potential to modify and extract more performance reliably and cheaply, and as a visceral experience an Impreza 2.0 STi has always been and still is very hard to beat IMO.

I used to have a STi mapped to approx 325. Didn't like the handling too much but 2nd and 3rd gear was great fun plus lovely burble.
Over 60 it's still pretty decent BUT A 300bhp+ ST would I think be quicker on the roll. EVO did a test on a 280bhp Mountune one and my Impreza could run better in gear times that that (measured on vbox as were Evos)

It's a 2006 blob eye saloon that I'd be looking at. Apparently 350bhp is easily attainable with an exhaust and air filter?
Driving is 50/50 motorway/local roads. Budget, I have 6k plus my current car (worth around 7k minimum) for the right car with the right mods.
Refinement is the last thing I want with a car like this haha
I prefer the look of the Hawkeye STi but am put off by the horror stories of the chocolate engine. Would a forged engine have solved these issues or can that go pop at any time as well?
Something like this:

I had an 05 wrx sti ppp, and found the performance underwhelming, the fuel consumption horrific and if anything I found it a little too refined in the sense that it was a very uninvolving car to drive... the only thing that saves it from me actually describing it as 'boring' was the characterful burble from the boxer.

Just buy it and if its not as fast as your mates ST tell the dealer you buy it back off you for just a few £ less.
Simples.

I can't speak for the newer ones but on the classic the transmission losses were significant (around 70bhp on our modded UK turbo which was allegedly running 251bhp at the flywheel) which meant it was quick off the line but the performance was less impressive above 60mph. The WRX STi PPP doesn't look too shabby though:http://www.torquestats.com/index.php?car_id=195
