I have a e46 m3 coupe just now that is a riot to drive and amazing sounding. But it is a bit too normal in terms of opening up the garage door and getting that heart fluttering feeling of looking at your pride and joy.

budget is what I could sell the car for so 10-12k.
Doors, economy, practicality reliability are all not important to me but it must have that wow factor which is missing in a 3 door family saloon car.

I'd be all over a TVR. Or a VXR220.

The opposite of what the OP asked for... Lots of fun when being driven, but my heart would sink a little every time I opened the garage door wink

How about an E21 BMW 323i road legal track car? I don't mean some tired old shed either. The example I know of is in lovely condition, with zero corrosion and a 2.8 m20 on megasquirt. It's super reliable and quicker to 80 than your M3. Another bonus is its value is increasing and you'll rarely see another. You could easily put an interior back in and make it less track and more road focussed too.

I guess there are lots of left field choices you could make?

This could be gorgeous and well within budget. It'll also make you a few quid and is such a cool car to own and drive.

Horses for courses. I love mine after 11 years of ownership and it still turns heads like nothing I've ever owned.

Inspired by the suggestion of the SL55 AMG, how about this monster?

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

Right at the top of the tree when it comes to bang for your buck. Power, prestige, presence, and more toys than Hamleys.

And, if you don't bite the back of your hand every time you look at it, then I'm the Pope. laugh

There are cheaper ways into a car with a wooden steering wheel

I'd be looking at an Elise or a Cayman S might sneak into budget.

Lovely V6 and even has a wooden steering wheel. No depreciation and cheap insurance.

Glorious. This would be my choice.

If it's wooden steering wheels you want, then how about this beauty:

With apologies to the OP, who has not once said he likes cars with wooden steering wheels. laugh

I love these, but have never quite been brave enough to buy one. They seem to have a problem with rust- you can see the inside of the bonnet is starting to go on that one.

Not sure I'd use them as a daily either.

OP- e39 M5 would be my suggestion

I saw Leslie Ash driving hers a few years ago. I don't know what exhaust she had fitted but it sounded awesome.

Shame they didn't give the interior a bit of love prior to those pictures.
