Hi all,

In my quest for a Mercedes W124 Coupe, I found a lot of over priced pride and joys and even more cars fit for the scrap yard.

All I was after to be honest, was a weekend car for myself and my 3 year old Jack to tinker with and take out when his Mum was at work. But I have always liked old Mercs and the 124 is something I have always wanted to own!

However, on this occasion it was not to be, as I purchased this, frankly, incredible bargain of an SLK 230k in silver with Red/Black interior.

I must say, it was never on my list of cars to get and it's not something I particularly liked, until I got it, but at the price I paid, it was a no brainer.

The car itself is in very good condition, bar a small patch of rust on the front offside wing. It's done 64k and has a full dealer service history and every receipt going back to new in '99. It's been garaged from new as far as I know and is in very good condition, there is just one catch.

The roof won't open!

The last owner only used it in summer and lost faith once the roof packed up, so it's been tucked away for a couple of years, but still run and serviced. There is no MOT though.

I have done my research and it appears that the micro switch on the load cover has gone, so it should be a £30-50 fix once I get back from my holiday! Then I intend to MOT it (it should pass) and run it as a weekend car for Jack and I. We can then tinker with it. He always wants to help me clean my E class and Golf, but I'm fussy, so now he has his own car to clean and drive around the local Supermarket Car park and private land (he is actually a bloody good driver already!)

So, here she is;

And the price I paid for this low mileage, low owner, full history, clean piece of never going to be a classic German car I hear you ask,

Well, it was............£125

Hopefully, I will update you with the pleasure and pitfalls of old Merc ownership. And if it all goes wrong, at least Jack and I will have some fun with the old girl!

I'm really not, haha! The last owner had lost faith in the car due to the roof failure and thought it would cost a fortune to fix. That and the age of the car made him want rid of hit.
As I didn't have it at the top of my list, or even on my list, I offered £100 to take it away. Thinking he would laugh it off. He settled on £125 and I couldn't believe it!

That’s good work! Will be interested to see what it actually ends up costing to get properly up and running.

The colours are great. These are really neat little cars and much more fun to drive than a lot of people give them credit for. £125 is laughable.

I intend to use this thread to update the cost of running the car for the next year and to inform people of what Jack and I get up to with the car! I'm thinking a couple of road trips and teaching him some more driving skills, as well as letting him help me fix anything that needs fixing, which apart from the roof, really is nothing! Tyres have 6+mm of tread and brakes were recently replaced too!

The price really is laughable, it came with a professional outdoor cover which probably cost more than £125!

I don't actually think the passenger seat has been sat in, it's like new inside the car!

125 quid, that is hilarious, well done on a hell of a bargain !

I think a lot of 124s etc are drastically overvalued and the later stuff the opposite.

Thanks for that. I am certain that I have narrowed it down to a roof micro switch, but I will watch that episode tonight to gain more knowledge of the vehicle!

I initially thought about stripping it and selling it as parts in order to profit, but to be honest, it's in such good condition that it deserves to be fixed and used, plus it will be fun for my little boy and I to play with!
I'm sure I'll move it on for a good profit in the next year or so, although I have given away how much it cost me now, so may not advertise it on Ph when I sell, haha!

Remarkable value. My mum had that original shape and then the subsequent shape. I always thought they were quite handsome beasts.

£125 is crazy! When did these get to shed money.

Just had a cursory look on ebay and stumbled upon this, er, example...where was that thread "using the Mrs to sell a car"?! Nasty

Bargain!

Could be one of a few issues with the roof, but non seem massively expensive to rectify, but even if diagnosis, fixes and MOT'ing etc cost a grand, it's still not an expensive car with that mileage and history...........IF.......... the bodywork is as good as you say, but if it is, it is surely not entirely original with the propensity for the panels to rust on these??

MOT History does look very promising for you as well though!!

Jammy git 😀.
