Trying to work out what to do, lock-wise, when we replace the front door with a uPVC one.

Definitely avoiding the cheap/nasty Eurolocks and going for something 3-star etc...BUT...

...from the inside, what's the best option:-
- keyhole mirroring the outside?
- thumb-turn?
- something else?

Important points:-
- We'd like bar-handles inside and out not a traditional uPVC handle. So there'll be nothing to turn to open the door from inside - we're presuming the thumb-turn or key-in-lock if we need to open the door?!? So if we go for a lock, then we need to keep a key to-hand by the front door at all times, with the risk we just leave it in the lock by mistake, which isn't secure...
- We've a full-height pane of glass next to the door on the lock side, which (I assume) reduces security if we go for a thumb-turn...

Any advice?

You could fit the worlds best lock on a upvc door but it won't help the fact that the centre panel is held in place with four flexible plastic beads, a good fart will knock one out. Watch any police program and if they raid a house fitted with a upvc door they always hit the panel not the door.

Thumb turn is only good for getting out - handy if there's a fire.

Handy to let burglar out carrying your 60" TV, who came in via a window.

I prefer to leave a key in the door, which we remove when we go out.

Not sure your plan will work.
Upvc doors seem to have twisty handles so yoiu can push them up and lock all the way round the door. How are you going to do that without a turny handle?

Personally, I'd want a key not a thumb turn for security, double so if you have young kids. My boy can get keys, unlock and open the front door - have to hide the keys so be can't wander off. He's only 3 but the little bugger is like Houdini sometimes!

You can get an automatic locking multipoint lock mechanism that shoots the hooks out when the door closes use the key like a nightlatch no need to lock with the key

I have a thumb turn but only high level glass everybody's situation is different so on the inside choose whatever suits your needs

Request a split Spindle and also request Ultion Home Defence System Security Cylinders.

https://www.ultion-lock.co.uk/

I only fit Ultion, there is no compromise when it comes to cylinders.

Split spindle - definitely, already knew about that.
Ultion - thanks - had come across the name before.

I guess if someone really wants to get in they will, was just wondering what the security implications were, considering that a set of patio/french doors are just two very large panes of glass...

I'd like to think your average scally who is just after your TV would go to your neighbours house if your has;

An Alarm
3 Star Locks
Split Spindle door handle
Anti-Snap door handles
Sash jammers.

They may try and go in elsewhere, but they may also decide that your neighbours house is an easier target. Good for you, bad for your neighbour, especially if you like them! biggrin

Who picks locks ?

I'd be interested in the stats - perhaps a concern for a bank but an ordinary home ?

I guess the question is more so about whether the thief is going to check which lock is fitted first before deciding to pick or not, if they know how to. I know I couldn't get a lock pick set and start picking locks, and it would I am sure take a thief some time to learn. It is still a little concerning when you watch the video all the way through..
