Hi

I've been trying to find the sizes of the 987.1 Cayman standard speakers, but getting conflicting information.

A couple of forum threads suggest the following sizes
http://www.caymanoc.com/forums/topic/574-speaker-u...
http://www.planet-9.com/987-cayman-and-boxster-ele...
http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/system-design-...

Doors
2 X 100mm (4inch) mids
2 X 200mm (8inch) lows.

Dashboard
2 X 19mm (3/4inch) tweeters,
1 X 70mm (2 3/4 inch) centre mid

Rear
2 X 100mm (4inch) mids

However when I watch door removal videos on youtube, it appears there is only one speaker in the door (might be being blind here...) ?

Anyone got any advice? Better information?

Cheers

So listening to my doors whilst the head unit is on I can hear music from the rear, and the smaller of the two speaker locations in the doors, nothing from the bigger location. Right now I'm a bit stumped....

I had the same problem. Have you replaced the head unit ?
I did and have a 987.1 the top speakers in the doors are connected straight to the head unit. On mine I have the sound upgrade with an amp (not the Bose) so no rears. This has an ask amp in with the air pump (for flat tyres) under the frunk. Of you replace the head unit then this will not turn on as you need to power the amp. I think from memory this was the black wire with the yellow stripe at the amp and also the back of the head unit.
Anyway the amp only powers the bottom speakers if you have them and the one in the centre of the dash I think. The amp has speaker level imputs from the head unit - they are prone to blowing up which might be your problem as sounds rubbish without them.
If you look up the pioneer sph120 (I think) I posted more on it there and has more of the information you may need.

The big speakers are powered by the amp in the front (the others are direct from the head unit).

I had the same issue. Blown amp.

I first pulled the amp apart and repaired it.

I then got a cheaper aftermarket and swapped it.

Cheers for the guidance,

After a lot more forum reading and google searching last night. I think I might know what the issue is.

The car does have an aftermarket head unit (bought it like this, door speakers made noise so didn't suspect anything!) and recon it's not linked up to the ASK amp in the front (which from reading forums, if I have the ASK amp, suggests the car has the SPP) which as you say, drives the bass 8" speakers. I definitely also have audio coming from two rear speakers.

So I recon, my possible desire to upgrade the door speakers is due to them actually not performing as they should (or at all) in the first place. Going to fix that problem first and see where I'm at. I've read the SPP system isnt actually all that bad. Got a SPH-DA120 on order and going to pull out the old headunit this weekend and see if the remote wire to the ASK amp is connected (hopefully, it is, otherwise that's a bigger problem :S)

Will update the thread once the jobs done.

Thanks for all the help so far!

I believe you can *short* the remote wire at the amp end, to get round this.

The replacement Pioneer I bought sits in the same spot, and is "remote sensing" so as soon as you give it a signal, it switches on.

You are correct but there is no point in doing it at the amp and this would make it on all the time. I traced the wire back to the dash so I could do it the right way.
I found my previous post here which has all the info.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

For the Pioneer you will need the Farka aerial kit and the surround bezel which I think I got from Amazon and is a perfect match. It doesn’t quite fit in the hole so I just cut a piece ply 9mm I think to put under the cage so it sits just right in the hole. Apart from switched power which you can take from the fuse box the rest just plugs into the existing loom with the supplied connectors.

I don’t have the rear speakers and like to hear the engine but am otherwise perfectly happy with the sound quality.

If you want to test the amp maybe try a wire straight from the battery to the same colour wire at the amp - you might want to stick a fuse in it though in case the amp is fubarrd ! If it is then it is worth noting that the amp has speaker level inputs so would need to be replaced with the same unless you run phono leads instead - then you are getting into a lot of re-wiring.

Also worth re-configuring the dash to display the range on the centre line instead of a blank radio station if you have this option ....

Happy days!

So looking this afternoon, managed to get everything working and a new head unit installed!

Suspicions were correct in that it was just the ASK amp not connected. Luckily it was already a Pioneer headunit, so once I'd taken off all the trim and popped it out, it was easy to see.

I looked up the pinout diagram of the CDR24 headunit and found this (cropped to be posted on here)

After I removed the headunit, I could see that the A2 connection had nothing going into it.

This is the one. Red and Black.

I had already cut it lose by the time I took the pic

It looked like during the last headunit install, they had already created a 'on ignition' powerline from the fuse box. So I linked it into this.

Tested, worked, now have base from my speakers and it sounds SO much better!! Will give it a few weeks, but think I wont be needing those speaker upgrades after all

Before....

After..... (sorry it was going dark when I finished)

Good news. Did you get the night time (lights on) dimming working and if so do you happen to know which wires to connect ?

I forgot to connect mine and have to turn the display off in the dark as it’s just too bright.

I see you also have the find a lump of wood that fits approach like me !

Ah, no. Didn't know about the dimming.

It is a little bright, but will need to see what it's like when driving to see if it will be an issue..

Is there anyway to manually turn the brightness down.

Also, how do you set the correct time, only seems to want to do every 30 min!

FML

So I cant access the picture adjustment option. reading online, this looks to be because the parking break line isnt connected! Apparently a Microbypass cable will do the trick. Anyone used these?

Worked out the time thing as well. Need to connect the GPS cable (Didnt think I would need it as my phone should have been good enough).

The manual leaves a lot out.

Do you know exactly what connection has to be made to make he dimming work? I installed this head unit a couple of years ago, and have always been meaning to get the dimming working.

It is very distracting when driving at night.

Round 2

Connected the park break wire to ground and plugged in the GPS, with a little coercing under/behind the glovebox and up the left side of the car its sitting nicely in the corner.

Took the car out for a drive, very happy with the new headunit. Having the speakers actually working makes such a difference and definitely wont need to be upgrading them.

Thanks for all the help and guidance. Its definitely been more of a journey than fitting headunits to my Astra's 10+ years ago! biggrin

Not fixed the dimming issue, but thats a problem for another day.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed to this thread it has been very helpful in pointing me in the right direction. I only wish I had seen this several months ago.
I have a 2008 cayman with the upgraded sound (not bose) and thought it was awful. I decided to replace the speakers one by one with Bose speakers I got from a breakers yard. It is an on going project due to lack of time. Anyway, after successfully replacing the dash tweeters, it was centre dash next. I made a school boy error and didn't check to see if it was working before I replaced it. I tested the speaker I had on other connections and it worked so it wasn't a speaker problem. Then today I went to change the door speakers, you guessed it, the smaller speaker was working but the larger one was dead as a dodo. I did recently take the CDR24 out to check that I had ISO and took a picture of the back. It looks like there is a brown wire going into A2 so I am guessing the amp has blown and will check that next for the tell tell signs. Unfortunately I have no experience with a a soldering iron or diodes, would replacing the amp be straight forward connection wise?
Many thanks again.
