Choice of two what to do?

So thoughts of upgrading my 996 C4S persist, i have test driven a 991.2 GTS and to be honest wasn't impressed with the sound at all, nor the way the engine delivered it"s power.
So having looked around the classifieds for a while i have spotted theses two, silver isn't my initial favorite colour but there are not many red GTS for sale lately.
So which is the better buy?

I'm aware that the 991 GTS is probably the better car, however is it worth the extra £42000 ?

What's wrong with the 996, anyway? The other two models will be better, but not out-of-sight better.

Cmoose, I suspect a lot of what you say is true, i also have a nagging doubt that the minute i buy the silver 991, a carmine red one will appear for sale.
To be fair i was offered a carmine and manual GTS privately recently but didn't like the clear rear lights it had fitted or the price which was looking like early 90's for a private sale.

You're not really comparing apples IMO.
If you're looking at price (a 40k+ difference) shouldn't you really be looking at 997 GTS v 991 GTS? So the difference will be much smaller.
I'm keeping a close eye on 997 prices as I suspect it'll be the next thing I buy. That C4S doesn't look cheap IMO. But then no 911 prices do at present!
From a 996 I think I'd be looking at a 991 if funds aren't a major issue...but a normal 'S' would be much less of a financial jump I would think.

The two cars you have chosen are clearly very different.
I just spent 18 months in a 997 GTS PDK. Had it been manual, it would probably have been a keeper, it had a lovely blend of the old and the new, looked great, sounded great, drove brilliantly. Ironically, the worst thing about it was that the market for them went crazy, its value started to go up and I started worrying about it instead of just enjoying it. The following observations are purely personal and completely subjective...
I couldn't really get my head around the 991 market, a lot of the cars seemed very expensive. Where I have a problem with the GTS you have posted is that it is already 3 years old. For the same money, I chose a new 991.2 T. It is being built to my exact personal spec this week and I should get it by the end of March. To me personally, that represented a possible once in a lifetime opportunity - I never thought I would ever be in a position in life to commission my own brand new 911 and I suspect that in the future, the cars will become more and more expensive and be full of technology that doesn't really appeal to me. I am hoping the T is a keeper but I haven't driven one yet - quite a gamble I know.
Out of the 2 cars you have asked for opinions on, I think the 997 would represent the better purchase as an enjoyable ownership proposition - it's not so expensive that you would be frightened to leave it in certain places, it is plenty fast enough and still has plenty of old 911 DNA in it. It is a very nice car. The 991 GTS is truly lovely but so fast that you can't "floor it" very often, it costs the same as a brand new car but it was someone else's brand new car. It is more refined than the 997 and psychologically feels a bit bigger to drive, dare I say more of a modern GT car that, dare I say, would better suit PDK? No wrong decisions here - as I said, just some personal thoughts. Good luck with the decision.

My Porsche CV is 10k miles in a 944 lux, 30k in a 996.2 Carrera 4, 22k in a Boxster Spyder, 25k in a 981 Cayman S PDK and 15k in the 997 GTS PDK. Plus all the loaners, PEC days, ice driving and Porsche jollies etc.
I would say that you could have a lot more “fun” in a Boxster Spyder with 320bhp than a 997 GTS with 408bhp (?) more of the time. My wife still says the 944 was her favourite.
I think there has been a remarkably successful political campaign to render driving quickly in public as antisocial as drunk driving and so long as that policy maintains its momentum, driving for pleasure on the highway becomes less and less enjoyable. Perhaps we’ll all end up towing our manual n/a Porsches to track days with our Mission Es for some recreation... anyway, I digress.

.2GTS. is more or less double the price of 997GTS.
.1GTS circa 50% more.
purely subjective but not sure they are worth the uplift.
997 GTS package is classic 911, modern enough but in no way super modern.
If you want more noise and power then go 991. but for most 997 GTS is plenty enough on UK roads, looks and sounds great and is not available in large numbers so price always seems to stick.
