With 'Search' still temporarily (shades of the 70 limit - no offence Ted!) withdrawn I am posting this without links to other recent posts referring to the proposed National ID card.

There has been mention of the government's inability to execute major computer projects to time, to cost and most particularly with the required reliability; in particular large (but smaller than the entire population) database systems have been significantly affected by an assortment of errors.

A 50,000 user trial of a smart-card based ID system was conducted in Cornwall. Now read this report from the BBC's website (dated 15 April 2005):

Plans for national ID cards may need to be reconsidered following the breakdown of a pilot project in Cornwall. The 'smart card' was tested through the Cornish Key scheme, but now the trial is to be withdrawn, despite an investment of £1.5m of government cash.

About 50,000 people signed up to access public services such as concessions on the buses and library membership using the Cornish key smart card.

Problems with scanning machines are being blamed for the failure.

North Cornwall District Council is one of the partners [in Cornish Key] and spokesman Paul Masters believes the card was far from practical. He says the failure of the smart technology in Cornwall needs to be addressed if a future government were to use it for national identity cards.

The existing Cornish Key cards will still be valid for use on buses and in libraries, but "active cards" will gradually be replaced with [a] new format card.

Roger Hargreaves, a spokesman for the county's passenger transport unit, says the smart cards will be phased out and replaced with simpler versions.

Like a piece of plastic with name and address, and maybe a photo? Oh I've already got one of those, it's called a driving licence. Morons the lot of 'em.

Its evil to the core, if you think gatsos and the like are bad, wait and see what the CARD is going to be used for.

Surprise surprise.

...and £1.5 million wasted on that small trial.

No doubt £billions would be wasted on a full implementation.

All those billions "stolen" by this government from pensions would be wasted - if it hasn't been wasted already on excessive public sector administration with no improvement in services. Labour never change.

Bumbling fools.

Und all the pensioners ae complaining about the pension card. They have plastic card und have to tap in pin number to get pensions.

Only.. old dears forget numbers und get locked after three goes und then have no money as result.

Queues are longer in Post Office because of this... und the old dear want their old books back as all they had to do was hand it over, sign it und receipt was stamped in book und no problem.

ist not just that they forget number though... sometimes this computer breaks down und they cannot have their money... ist a disgrace really.
