Honda Civic Type R pick-up!

Well, they couldn't possibly make it look worse...

You probably won't have heard of the SMMT Test Day. Held at Millbrook, it's essentially an opportunity for journalists to wangle a go in cars they've not already drained the tank of, while also whingeing to PRs about the refreshments. This year, however, it's been made rather more interesting thanks to Honda and a one-off Civic Type R...

As you can quite clearly see, it's a pick-up. Codenamed 'Project P' by Honda, the pick-up has been built from a pre-production Type R - maybe it was one of those ones that blitzed the 'ring - and even keeps the spoiler of the hatch. With the same 320hp as the standard car and presumably little weight difference, Honda claims the pick-up Type R can still reach 62mph in less than six seconds and top out at more than 165mph. We'll take their word for it.

The Type R truck has been built Synchro Motorsport - the same people behind the Civic Type R tourer - with Alyn Jones from Synchro describing this car as a "fantastic opportunity for the team to show just what their creative minds could do." There's even talk of sending it around the Nordschleife for another tenuous Honda front-wheel drive record; most likely wouldn't be the weirdest thing on the track that week.

While there are no plans, of course, to produce a Civic Type R pick-up, although Honda will apparently use it to shift lawn and garden products around when required. The spoiler even moves, to "allow direct and unfettered access to the rear of the truck." So bravo Honda, for doing something a bit daft - for no reason other than because you could. We look forward to the HR-V roadster...

I actually really like this, IMO the only thing that lets it down is keeping the rear spoiler, makes it kind of hard to read as a pickup unless you really look.

Creative minds laugh well creative cutting off the back and riveting on some tread plate
It’s never been done before I’m totally amazed at the forward thinking of this project sleep

If you were going to chop up a new CTR like this, wouldn't it have been better making it into something useful?

3 Door, Shooting Brake, Estate would have been better? confused

Even shoehorning Type R performance in a Juke would get me interested, would be an absolute B road menace ....

Yep, an hour or so with an angle grinder and a couple of hours trimming up some chequer plate, bolt in a roll cage to make up for stiffness lost and you have a perfect scrap-heap challenge entrant.

Why can't people take a bit of time to finish something off properly, say like these where the bed and the back of the cab actually looks like it was thought about:

Couldn’t get it finished in time for 1st April...

Hideous and utterly pointless. Nothing about this is impressive.

The standard car is a mess, this just looks like some weird home made project.

Why not direct efforts into improving the vehicle. An Ultimate performance orientated version or a different type r version of the civic which might actually hold some form of commercial appeal.

Give them a break fellas!

A couple of engineers simply saved a pre production prototype from the crusher and without any budget had a bit of fun after hours.

Honda aren’t claiming this is their next big creative challenge, it’s being bigged up by PH as it’s probably a quiet day for manufacturer press releases.
