Back in the day when I used to toll up and down the motorways of this horrible little island I would often have to stop for fuel or a comfort break at a motorway services. They were simple affairs with an off slip into the service area, fuel at the end and an on slip back on to the motorway.

Over the last few years I have returned to doing a fair few miles and nowadays the 'modern' services seem to be located half a mile off the motorway accessed via various interconnected roundabouts or via a swirling looping road that drives you half way round the perimeter of said services with various entrances and exits for trucks, coaches, caravans etc. and VOSA stations, drivethrus, hotels etc. making finding the actual services or filling station unnecessarily complicated and bloody time consuming.

Why not just keep it simple?

I have taken to keeping notes on the ones to avoid!

Is it just me? Probably LOL!

I'm guessing the Farmers/Landowners that have the convenient land next to the highways hold out for a big wedge, so they just site them elsewhere.

If the services are at a shared juntion - i.e. they have a junction number, and go not just to the services but also other destinations, then don't stop. Done that all my life. Pretty easy.

p.s. if you feel like this place is a " horrible little island" - why dont' you bugger off elsewhere? It's very easy too.

If you build them off the motorway you don't have to build two sites, and the land is cheaper.

Good grief. "horrible little island ". I suggest you check out other places on this horrible little earth. It's about as good as it gets here!

I avoid them all like the plague, personally, given that they are such hateful and overpriced facilities especially when fuel is concerned.

Its not hard to identify off-motorway fuel stations located conveniently near common routes so as get a much better price for minimum deviation.

You lost me at 'horrible little island'.

We're bloody lucky to be here, and if you think it's horrible either fk off somewhere else or get out more and see some of it's beauty. Cheers.

I have lived and/or worked in over 50 other countries in my lifetime. I have my opinion and I'm relatively well qualified to have it too. No other place I've lived or worked has voted out of an organisation like the EU with one of the main reasons being 'they don't like Johnny Foreigner'! So let's leave it there!

Sadly not nearly as good as they used to be. I was disappointed with the food last time I ate there, and the less said about the ludicrous prices they charge in their farm shops the better. A victim of their own success I would say - the last time I bothered stopping there was a couple of days after Christmas, the roads weren't all that busy and I was still parked in the overflow car park, had to queue for the loo, and didn't even bother trying to get into the restaurant.

Only part of this "horrible little island " voted to leave the EU. Not the part I live in. Have you ever lived in Highland Scotland? If not... give it a try! :0)

Why would you ever stop at a motorway services?

Have a piss before you leave, and make sure the car is full. Unless you're doing 400 miles + (rare in the UK), you don't need to stop there.

They're horrible places with vile food and the fuel is a rip off.

I wish I had your bladder control, a few cups of coffee, hit the inevitable 50mph stretches, car accident and a 250 mile journey is easily 4 plus hours.

So is it the 'horrible' British people you don't like (well the ones that voted leave anyway), or the 'horrible little island' itself? Make up your mind man, for goodness sake.

The day I get 400+ miles out of a tank of petrol will be a day to remember

Because off the mway services can be accessed by both directions of traffic instead of building two separate sites on both sides. And as others have said only usually used by truckers who are stopping for their 45 min break or people wanting toilet/food breaks so the added 1 minute drive into the services makes no difference.
