Driving along the motorway when I noticed this vehicle sat on the bridge, same as the one pictured but has a small white box on the top? I was going about 75-77mph before I noticed it, another car was in front doing the same speed I slowed right down where the other car carried on, I was only speeding due to overtaking someone in the middle lane, I was doing 70 the whole journey but stupidly the time I speed I see one of these, I’ve seen people fly past these in the past, just wondering can they do you for speeding? Thank you

I’ve never done a course and my licence is clean, so will I get offered a course if I do get a nip?

FFS how many more times does this question have to be answered?

Highways England Traffic Officers have NO powers to prosecute.

They can - and do - pass on details to Police of acts of utter stupidity and dangerous driving, however.

If 75-77 was your indicated speed then the chances are your actual speed was nearer 70 an. below the threshold for a NIP

Yes of course spray or no spray. But a course a slap on the wrist half a day of your time and a small fee to pay we’ve all been there it’s no big deal.

That will be a not. AFAIK Highways England are not the police or part of a SCP.
They can't nick you for speeding. It's not part of their remit.

It "might" have been a police vehicle.

I was covering all bases with that answer.

None of us were there.

As one well known comedian was wont to say "IT'S ONLY A WOMBLE" ,aka "TRAFFIC OFFICER" , often seen in L1 of a Motorway near you , flapping their arms like a Swan trying to take off . Often found in Police parking bays on the motorway and on bridges imitating real police ,but IMHO a major contribution to shunt accidents, where numpty sees marked vehicle on either side of road oron bridge and panic brakes, leading to follow on braking.

Not so. The OP is 'one of us' and he was there.
I'm happy to go along with his Mk1 eyeball identification of the vehicle.
Presumably he can tell the difference between black and blue. wink

Also, the police tend to use vehicles other than 4x4 Mitsubishi Shoguns for motorway patrol duties.

That pretty much sums it up. The vehicles are designed to look as police-like as possible (down to black/clear glass yellow beacons on the roof) to assist with this confusion.

How old are you? how long have you been driving? Highways England Traffic Officers have been on the motorways since 2004, that 14 YEARS!! and you don't know what they are or what they do.
I would suggest that you either sell your car and start using public transport. or buy a copy of the updated Highway Code and READ it!
