The Mrs and I get around that by having a shared account we both put an agreed amount in that the bills and a bit of joint saving goes in. After that our own money is fair game. She doesn't complain about my garage full of bikes and I don't complain about her room full of nail varnish.
+1
22 years in and never had a single row about money. Yet, people think we're strange for doing it this way...

Not to be devils advocate on this, but...

I can see where your OH is coming from, that you have a loan and its manageable, but the moment you come into a bit of money, you have spent in on yourself rather than reduce the loan that you have.

I dont pretend to even know how that loan affects your family life, but if she is complaining about it, then I would suspect its a little bit.

Would the loan not have benefitted from 350 taken off it instead? Or at least a bit more discussion on the SUP first to your OH as she is obviously not happy in the situation.

Now if you didnt have any loans and people were complaining, then fk em all, but this is not the case.
Should point out we don't live together and have only been together since end of January this year.

Yes it could have gone towards paying the loan off, but I could say that about everything I spend money on.

I spend about 25% of my income on motorcycles and pushbikes, the rest goes into mortgage, savings and on the usual monthlys (food, fuel, cars electric etc).

I could have the mortgage done with far quicker if I cut down on the two wheeled activitites but I don't regret a penny spent on them when I see my mortgage balance.

As always life is a balance, I drive a £500 battered diesel focus and on the face of it could do with a new car according to most people. It's mechanically fine but isn't new and certainly looks out of place in the work car park.

My view is minimise the cost of the boring stuff, be responsible with money but enjoy life as much as you can at the same time. It sounds like that's what you're doing (assuming the loan isn't ridiculous in terms of interest), but even then you don't say how much of your money goes on the boring stuff and how much is for fun. 350 quid from working a little extra and the sale of something you don't use on something that puts a grin on your face and helps you stay healthy sounds spot on to me.
This is what I'm getting at. I don't spend money on drink/drugs/smoking. I have a shed of a car but it's fun to drive. I had a motorbike but sold it as I needed a car as it was more practical when going to hers (she lives an hour away).

When did you last spend anything on her of for both of you?

Also what % of the debt would this represent or how many months payments?
Paid for a meal out yesterday and the week before, and she's currently on her way to a spa treatment that I got for her birthday...

Loan is £215 a month, so a month and a halfish.

If your comfortable with outgoings and have reserves left spend it enjoying your life. You never look back and go oh I wished I didn't buy that and enjoy it and paid a but more of my loan of etc. Life is for living so live it to the full you never know when your time is up ignore the others.

If your OH is already doing that after 6 months, you need to have a conversation about this and knock it on the head.

I was under the impression this was something more along the lines of 5+ years and so the opinion holds more weight.

If you cant do that now, then you are going to suffer massively in the long run.

just tell them to fk off and you'll do whatever you want with your money. next time someone breathes oxygen tell them they're doing it wrong and tell them the right way. its annoying how people think it's acceptable to tell others how to do things/live their life etc..

Wow, 6 months, didn't realise that. Don't be taking that crap after 6 months. Knock it on the head asap or it will only get worse!

Your money use it how you please. I don’t understand why anyone comments on it. Different if you were on benefits but I’d say continue what you’re doing and enjoy your cash.

I bet the cost of buying your 3 series is less than paying one month payment on your friends pcp deal.

whilst she is your girlfriend you have only been with her this year and you don’t live together. It’s none of her business

I don’t think at the 6 month mark in any relationship I’d want a girl know my financial situation and more importantly it’s none of her business until she starts to get her finances intertwined with mine eg joint house purchase

Get lots of people saying I spend to much on cars for my income and age, they may be right but it's still none of their bloody business. I'm not in any sort of debt, I pay my way for everything dont smoke dont do drugs and drink a negligible amount and I save what's leftover. Everyone else can go swivel as far as im concerned.
What do you do?

Subtle innuendos follow.

Not being a powerfully build, high flying PH director, who knows the finer points of investments, I employ the services of an independent financial advisor who helps me to put my meagre farm workers wage to good use so I can afford to eat and not live in a tent in old age. He said to me "Willy, what do you need all of this money for, you should go out and spend a bit". fk that I thought.

I'm in the minority on this I know, but we have a joint account, a joint credit card (actually it's my account, she has a second card on it) a mortgage and an offset account. We don't' have our own money, because we have a mortgage, so anything we spend is borrowed money and longer on the mortgage, so we're both happy for each other to have a view on how our joint income is spent as really most stuff is less important than paying down the mortgage and not hosing interest up the wall for any longer than is absolutely necessary.

It works fine, because my wife isn't a dhead and we both understand what's important to each other. (Also because my wife earns a lot more than me and isn't arsed about owning stuff :-) ) Anyone else with an opinion can fk off though.

To be honest, the only issue I ever have is my Mum telling me off for buying this:

Kind of depends on the balance/number ovmonths you have left

If you had a couple left then clearing it would have been pleasing otherwise meh

Everyone on PH is a powerfully built director type who buys their cars outright and looks down on people who pay monthly for a PCP or lease
