Just cut a key myself for my old 2002 Vauxhall vectra.Just starting out in this line to go hand in hand alongside the car tech course i'm on.
I cut the key and it fits, goes in fine. Question is what should i be able to do with this key 'before' programming the fob?
Should the key turn just now, but just not start the car? Should the key not turn at all as it's not programmed yet? Key isn't turning in the ignition barrel just now. Thanks.

I would have thought it that it should turn the switch but not start the car

Does the key work in the door locks either?

The key fits in the barrel but doesn't turn? That suggests to me that it's not been cut, or not been cut correctly.

With regards to programming, you can do that with a £10 eBay OP-COM system and a laptop, presuming you have the 4 digit key code which is normally found on the Vauxhall Car Pass supplied with the car when it was new.

I've got the programming side of things covered with a couple of tools. I did try it in the door too earlier and it won't turn.
The blank key i got 'looked' very slightly narrower in width, but i bashed on thinking new shiny metal just made it look different and cut it anyway. I've just checked now though, newer key blank is indeed 1mm narrower! , thought my eyes were deceiving me, this has probably thrown off the cutting side of things! :-)

Seems to me it can't be cut right if it won't turn in the lock.

Just cut one for my megane, works perfectly! Must be the width of that blank from Ebay just wasn't right.

Got to the bottom of the problem, and ofcourse the problem is, as is so often the case lately, China!
Just got a refund there for the key and all the writing was in Chinese, not again i thought, no mention of China in description, or location! This has happened a few times to me lately. Just crap quality.
