5 door family car up to £3k - fun to drive

Hi all,
Looking for some help. Lease A4 going back soon and decided not to get another one. We have 2 MX5s (Mk1 and cheap lease Mk4) and a Porsche 996 (which I'm trying to sell) so when the A4 goes back we'll need a family car. Started looking at SUVs and like the look and reputation of the Lexus RX but not sure on running costs as a daily. So looked at CR-V / RAV 4 but the MOT history on most I've looked at isn't too good. So then thought of more entertaining options and at the minute can't get past Mondeo ST220 (same issues as RX300 though), Mk5 Golf GTi or a nice Merc C class estate. Any other suggestions. Criteria are £3000, 5 door and petrol, nothing French or Italian, reasonably reliable.
