Hi this is really bugging me is 5w40 oil safe to use in a three cylinder polo 1.2 engine instead of 5w30 Volkswagen and handbook say use 5w30 is there any difference in oil ? and would it be a bad idea. Both are fully synthetic with the correct Volkswagen specification numbers
Thanks

HTHThanks
I'd always stick to the manufacturer's recommendation as per the handbook. Handbooks will specify permissible alternative grades (usually as 'OK for top ups') if there are such things. If there is no alternative listed in the book, I would assume it is not OK to use.
For the cost of the right oil versus the job it does, and the implications of getting it wrong, it's not worth the risk, IMO.

I wouldn't have thought so, but 5W40 would be better suited to an engine that's got higher miles etcThanks
If yours is high'ish miles, use it, you may find the engine runs quieter with it being that bit thicker, in the long ruine, it's not going to do any damage at all
Almost every BMW I've run is 5W30, but I run 5W40 due to age, miles etc... Zero issues, but a quieter and smoother engine
