Tool Roll Cab advise

Hello

I’m in the market for a tool cabinet on wheels – a roll cab I believe.
I believe the default would probably be Snap-On , but the price ????
Or are they worth the asking price ??

Can anyone recommend a good one, from experience ??
I have been looking at Machine Mart on line , but will have to wait a while before I can visit. Possibly 7 drawers , ball bearing drawers and locks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Used Snap on would be my choice.

Speak to a couple of local distributors, they often take them as PX for a bigger setup,

Ebay as well, but potential for stolen goods......

Yep, save your money and buy some of these, very good quality for the money.

Is this home or commercial?

I've got 2 of the halfords basic range. Had them years, been absolutely fine. Not the most heavy duty but I have heavy air guns and bits in one drawer and it's fine.

Had snap on when I was in the trade, sold it years ago, then when I wanted more storage in my home garage, I got Halfords professional one, and its excellent, bearing roller draws, worth the money.
Good discount if you or someone you know has a trade card too.

Great compromise at £320 between spending 2 grand on something and a cheapy one. Never have issues with them and the range of clip on/bolt on storage bits is very useful.

I have Snap-On, bought them second hand from a genuine seller (don't buy stolen), the used stuff is good if looked after. The most modern kit that is massive is not my scene, the old school sizing works best for me, plenty of this about as people "upgrade".

The good thing about Snap-On is it retains a good value, my top box is actually worth more than when i bought it as its a discontinued design that is very sought after.

As to what you should buy, it depends, if you just want something to stay in your garage in the corner to hold you tools you don't use all the time, just buy a budget set.

If you can hang on, keep an eye on eBay and local selling sites/apps. There’ll be a lot of people from aviation selling their tools.

Have a look at Costcos signature range, they have a huge chest for not much more than £500

If money no object then Teng, or Snapon or Facom or similar.

At work I have Snapon, but bought used. Exceptionally good.

If for home use, and on a budget then Lidl and Aldi do some occasionally. All the cheap ones (draper/basic halford etc) are much of a muchness.

You can occasionally find decent nick snap on 40" cabs on ebay / gumtree for around 500-600, bit expensive but as mentioned they hold their value.
I bought a standard 7 drawer 26" with a top box for near enough 400.
For daily use i would recommend a used snap on box, quality is definitely up there. buy once cry once and all that.
Have a SO box in the garage from the 80s and built like a tank, drawers still slide nice

Bahco used to sell (dont know if they still do) re badged snap on boxes without the shiny trim for a lot less, they make a lot of stuff for SO ie files, hacksaws etc.

I had a Halfords basic roll-cab for more tha ten years. The drawer slides did get a bit sticky, but when I upgraded to a Halfords Advanced with ball bearing slides, the old one went at once on eBay for more than half price, to a pro who wanted more storage space! Maybe I should have kept it!

Halfords take a bit of beating for price versus quality. Ignore the £90 all in one with the cabinet at the bottom though.

Trade card makes for a decent discount. I have one of the newer “Halfords” ones (left) and one of the older Professional ones:



Deals come and go. Currently about £300 for the stack of 3 units I think, I paid about £260.

The “advanced” black stuff I don’t think is worth the extra - it isn’t the quality of the old “Industrial” stuff.

Don't touch new Snap On.
I used to buy regularly off the Snap On truck, until I ordered a small toolbox. When it arrived it had a label similar to this on it, and I told him to keep it.

Of course snap on is made outside the USA, quite a lot of their tools are. I bought some pliers the other day that were made in Spain but so what?
If everything was USA made it would be even more expensive!

I'm only a DIY-er these days so I have a Clarke (machine mart) roll cab. It's great for amateur use but it not a patch on a snap on epiq!

I've had a Halfords Advanced box in the back of my van for over a year now and no issues. To put that in context, it's bolted through the floor of the box onto the van and every drawer is full of tools so there is a considerable weight. Even with all the twisting and battering that the box must go through as I travel I've not had any faults whereas a colleague has had rivets come out of his box and it's in tatters. Spend the extra money on good tools rather than the box which holds the tools.
