My 1.4 HDi Peugeot ticks over like a dog, but starts easily and drives OK, with no black smoke.

Its an the 8 Valve DLD / HDi engine used in PSA and Ford Vehicles; Ford calls its the TDCi Duratorq. In this case its in my 'temporary' Pug 206 (1398cc)

I've checked...

Head Gasket: Colour Tester says OK, 1.4's not known for HG issues

EGR: OK (isolated it by disconnecting the tube and the Turbo breathing fresh air, briefly; no effect)

DPF: not fitted, its too old

Cat blocked: no, removing the rear box while running has no effect (its is in the rear box, yeah?

Redex and an Italian Tune have also both failed to cure it

So we're down to Injectors.... I've checked they're tight and I've checked for Black Death.

There's no exhaust smell and while I'm not sure what 'Chuffing' sounds like, I don't think its chuffing.

There's no black death, but there are two small pools of Diesel close to Pots 2 & 3, which daughter's DV6TED had (1.6HDi 16v.... oooh-err.... but running well, lets hope it stays that way). That was idling fine but did smell of exhaust particularly after a few mins at tickover. An Injector was loose - the 1.6 is infamous for it, where the 1.4 and 2.0 aren't known for it; and tightening that fixed hers.

This one doesn't idle fine at all and also doesn't smell of exhaust; and the pools of diesel are no worse than they were on hers, which makes me think maybe its an Injector gone. How can I tell which Injector's gone?

Or do you have to replace all four coz there's no way of knowing?

And could it be something more serious, there does appear to be a 'pinking' noise at mid revs on acceleration, so I'd be inclined to do a compression test if I've gotta have the injectors out; but that could just be compression escaping and the diesel not burning properly.

On Cold Start (it starts easily) it initially runs lovely, for about 5 seconds, and then gets progressively worse. By the time its been running a minute or so its as bad as it gets. It doesn't cut out and it seems OK for power. Following it down the road, in normal driving; the exhaust is 'clean'. Missus isn't very good at driving a car hard thru the gears, so not easy to arrange to drive with Lead Boots while I follow in a second vehicle.

Or maybe there's something else to check first....? Its done it in my ownership and there's nothing 'special' about how it began, just normal driving then one day it wouldn't tick over properly

Thanks in advance

No. The catalytic converter will be close to the engine. They only work when hot so it needs to be as close to the engine to have the exhaust gas as hot as possible.

Thanks Neil, will look again at the Exhaust with a view to 'temporarily dismounting' it if poss
