Hi all
Strange comparison in some eyes
Currently have my 997 CSR up for sale at RPM Technik and run a lovely Audi B5 S4 as a daily (owned twice)
With current climates am considering selling the S4 as well and running “1 car does all” scenario ....
The RS6 is the obvious choice to me for obvious reasons..... imperious stunning and unbelievable performance.... all of which comes at a cost
Enter the Golf R ... ok no RS6 but a great drive well equipped and not shabby in the performance stakes...... and relatively cheap to run
Thoughts please

The Golf R is a great do it all daily, but it's pretty boring (I've got one).

Having owned both, both are great cars but very different in character.. R is very competent car, RS is a beast!.. Golf is cheap to own and run, RS6 isn’t..

Really just depends what you want, I went golf for similar reasons you discussed but always end up going back to a beast / something special and wasted a load of money doing it.. just get a beast and stick with it.. we’re all going electric etc get something you love while you still can..

A interesting two cars to narrow your choice down to.

I'd expect the running costs are the biggest difference between the two cars, the performance gap (at normal road speeds) is not the largest but the way the power is delivered/deployed to the road will make it worth road testing both.

Just to throw a spanner in the works since you love your Porsche , could a Panamera fit the bill?

I’ve just moved on a Golf R after a year having bought it to be a do-everything daily driver.

I hated the Subaru-sound-alike 4 cylinder engine (25 years since the last 4 cylinder) and found it dull. It has a fair bit of push even if it’s delivered in a way I didn’t like, and to its credit limpet like grip. Too many bits of driver assistance that I found to be annoying. Bottom line: it didn’t engage me and I didn’t like it.

I looked at a B8 RS4 and a Panamera as replacements. I was really tempted by the RS4 but couldn’t find one that ticked my boxes so got a Panamera. An RS6 was on my long list but personally I don’t find them attractive.

ETA; just seen that you’ve had a manual 997.1 turbo and GT3 and rate your CSR above those.

In the simplest terms: do not bother with a Golf R. Even the heady delights of a manual. 400 yards max and you will want to be shot of it (unless you are downgrading your car needs by a couple of orders of magnitude).

RS6/Panamera: DSG/PDK boxes are not adequate substitutes for manuals. Unless you’re ready for a big switch from what you want from your cars I am struggling to begin to think of what two, let alone one, car combo would replace a B5 S4 and your Porsche.

Give us some info. Why are your trading sideways and what do you want from your car(s)?

Hi Guys
I guess it’s a situation brought on by current climates I’m a Area manager for a pub group (that should give you some insight) and am just feeling a little out of kilter. I don’t do finance so there’s a pool of money available for my car addiction and it’s a case of making that work. What I need is a bigger budget smile I know it’s a cliche but you always want a pound more than you’ve got.
Unfortunately I just don’t like the look of the Panamera so that’s a non starter. I’ve had 8 RS4’s (B5 & B7) and fancied something “different “ and personally the C7 RS6 is just a very compelling package.
I’m now considering keeping the CSR and selling the S4 (see pistonheads classifieds) and having one daily.
Head before heart it’s leaning towards Golf R. I think it’ll hold value better and worst case I can change it after 6 months if I’m not bonding with it. RS6 values look like they are starting to come down so might be the best plan all round and bag a bargain RS6 in 6-12 months

I payed 54k for my 17 plate, like yourself I buy outright. I could not get a penny of my 6. Plan on keeping it for 5 years I love the car, I think it would get back at least 35 k according to one dealer. I’m surprised to hear golf r,s hold the value well, there ten a penny round my area. Never see a 6 ever really but do see lots of golfs everyday.
