Hi All,

My mate has asked if I could replace the battery in his Merc E Class, 2013 with start/stop. Does anyone know if I would need to have the car ‘told’ that it has a new battery? I’ve been told yes and no by a few folk. Wondering if anyone has first hand experience.

I know BMW of a similar era need told.......so know it’s’a thing’! 🤣

I am doing the same on my 2014 E class at the weekend.
As far as I can tell the answer to your question is no.
Unlike BMW there seems to be no need to tell this generation E class that the battery has changed.

Be careful that you get the correct battery. All the usual sites listed an 017 or 019 battery for my car but this is not what it has fitted.
Also be aware that in addition the main battery under the bonnet it also has an auxiliary battery for the stop/start.

Thanks for that, I’ve been getting mixed responses.

The smaller auxiliary battery in the boot was replaced last summer for whatever reason, and wasn’t entirely sure what that covered, but now I know it’s the stop/start element.

Did you lose any coding or encounter any electronic gremlins, or have you still to carry out the replacement? No issues with keys I presume?

I replaced my auxiliary battery last year as I kept getting an ‘auxiliary battery warming’ on the dashboard. That was just replaced without any coding or issues.

I have not yet replaced my main battery, I am doing it tomorrow.

I have asked a lot on dedicated Mercedes forums and the consistent message back is that no coding is needed. They have said that the only issue encountered is that the limits for the windows and sunroof will need to be reset (using the switches).

I am probably going to connect a spare battery to the jump start terminal under the bonnet to keep power to the car.

Thanks for the suggestion but the E class has a +ve point for jump starting fitted under the bonnet.

I will just use some small jump leads to connect to that +ve point and a suitable earth point on the chassis, so hopefully won’t need special leads.

Battery changed. 10mm spanner and a 13mm socket on an extension.
10 minute job which took a bit longer as I stopped for a coffee.

I connected a spare battery to the car via the jump start point so I never lost power to the car.

In case anyone is reading this in the future I replaced a A0009822108 Mercedes battery with a 115 AGM battery (they were identical).
