My 08 3 series struggles to start in the morning ( not a battery issue) but finally does. Scanned this morning P1030 code came up. Once starting engine light comes on and once its started it goes back to normal but i have noticed smoke coming from under bonnet and through air vents. It doesnt effect the driving at all. Anyone have any ideas?

Where under the bonnet is the smoke coming from? What does it smell like? What engine is it? Does it always do it or occasionally? Had it been getting worse gradually or suddenly? Any symptoms when driving?

Sounds to me like it could be more than one issue.

Unless something is catching fire outside the block, which seems unlikely, then the smoke will be from somewhere on the exhaust side of the engine, or the engine itself. So the manifold gasket, the manifold, turbo & gaskets, downpipe etc. Or, the injector seals, head gasket etc.

Most of those things wouldn't usually stop it from starting, unless the head gasket is so blown out that it can't get compression.

Maybe the best thing to do is to open the bonnet, start it and find out where the smoke is coming from. That might narrow it down a bit.

And the P1030 code is usually the valvetronic servo or sensor. Not sure that would cause release of smoke.
So possibly a different issue for the smoke.
But the P1030 could potentially affect starting if incorrect valve openings prevent compression.

Hi. The fault code i delete then it starts fine. Same will happen tomorrow morning or the morning after though.

The smoke i fault was oil splashed heating up but i cleaned it all out and it still comes through. Slowly getting worse too.

Where did you clear the oil from? How much oil are you using? Did you get your battery issue sorted or is that still a problem?

There was never a battery issue. The car turns over then dies then i have to wait a little bit for it to start but once it starts it runs fine all day stopping and starting.

The smoke issue is coming from behind the oil filter next to the engine it seems but not too sure. It only smokes when engine is on and i am stationary

Ok, I'm not familiar with the 4 cylinder engine, but assuming the oil filter is on top line the 6 cylinder then id assume the oil leak is a probably a gasket rather than something to do with the fault code, worth checking hoses going to the top of the engine though to make sure you haven't got an oil leak on something going to a solenoid.

Hi All, So the oil filter gasket was replaced and it no longer spilling oil or smoking under the bonnet. The issue i have now is that if the car is left for longer than say 10 hours it will start and die straight away. I then have to push the button and rev it up to start it. Once started it runs fine and can be turned on or off etc until left for longer than 8 hrs. Any ideas at all?

Battery drain - either the boot or a door isn't closing properly and a light is on somewhere

Fuel fall-back.

Try turning it on & waiting a few seconds for the fuel pump to finish priming & then see what happens.
